UPB Redesigns Elementary Education
Major to Meet New State Requirements

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has redesigned its elementary education major to meet new requirements from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The new major, “Early Education, Pre-K-4,” replaces the elementary education major, although students will be able to graduate with an elementary education major through the spring 2013.

Dr. Donna Dombek, associate professor of education and coordinator of elementary education, said that she has been working for several years to develop the new major, which was approved by the state’s Department of Education in 2010 and by the University of Pittsburgh in the fall.

The state will change its requirements for certification at the end of summer 2013, Dombek explained, requiring teachers to have a bachelor’s degree in prekindergarten through grade 4 or grade 4 through 8. Currently elementary school teachers are certified to teach prekindergarten through sixth grade.

Pitt-Bradford might offer a major to study education for grades 4 through 8 in the future.

“I think that the new age breaks will allow us to more fully prepare our students,” Dombek said.

The new major adds foundation courses such as Family and Community Relationships, a childhood development course focusing more on young children, and additional methods courses in assessment techniques, math, reading preparation and classroom management.
