Liederkranz Prize Winners Victoria
Canizzo, Alok Kumar to Perform at SBU
Soprano Victoria Canizzo and tenor Alok Kumar will perform a recital of operatic duets, arias and love songs at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26, at The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University.
Canizzo and Kumar, winners of the Quick Center for the Arts Performance Prize at the 2011 Liederkranz Competition in New York City, will be accompanied by pianist Elizabeth Hastings.
This is the sixth concert of the Friends of Good Music season at The Quick Center.
The concert will be narrated by Joseph A. LoSchiavo, associate vice president for The Quick Center at St. Bonaventure. He will guide the audience through the evening, explaining the settings of the works being performed and providing background information about the operas and composers.
LoSchiavo is also a noted opera stage director who has directed productions for the New York City Opera National Company, the Kentucky Opera, the Arizona Opera, Wolf Trap Festival in Washington, D.C., and many others.
Annually since 1960, the Liederkranz Voice Competition in New York has counted among its prize winners some of the nation’s most important young singers, many of whom have advanced to major careers.
Canizzo recently made her European debut at the Sofia Opera in Bulgaria in an operatic gala with the National Orchestra, and appeared in the demanding title role of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” with Tri-Cities Opera in Binghamton. The Broome Arts Mirror wrote of that performance: “Victoria Canizzo plays the part of Lucia with abandon and astounding control over her instrument. Her show-stopping mad scene was thrilling.”
Kumar, who was born in India and raised in upstate New York, scored a great success in the role of Tamino in Mozart’s “Die Zauberfloete” at Opera Delaware. He has also appeared at the Spoleto Festival in Italy, the Austin Lyric Opera, the Boston Opera Institute, and with the Boston Pops.
Hastings, music director of the Liederkranz Foundation and Opera Theatre, has guest-conducted at many opera companies and is a sought-after coach and accompanist in New York City. This will be her sixth appearance at The Quick Center, the last being in 2008 when she conducted the very successful performances of the opera double-bill “The Three Hermits” and “Hester Prynne at Death,” by Stephen Paulus.
Ludwig Brunner, interim executive director of The Quick Center, said the campus is excited to be hosting the performance. “It is always very special to hear these young and upcoming singers in our intimate theater. It is with great satisfaction that we support them on their paths to careers that might lead them all around the world, and we’ll always remember them with pride,” he said.
This performance is supported in part by the New York State Council on the Arts.

For each Friends of Good Music performance, The Quick Center will open its galleries one hour before the performance and keep them open throughout the intermission. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
