'Look as if You Want to be on Main Street'

Main Street businesses should look as if they want to be part of Main Street.

OECD Executive Director Sara Andrews said that’s the attitude she and Main Street Manager Colette Roessler are going to try to encourage business owners to have.

Andrews and Roessler talked about the downtown business district prior to Tuesday’s Bradford City Council meeting when they discussed applying for a Keystone Communities Main Street Façade Grant. If they get the $50,000 grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development, they would continue the façade improvement program, which has already led to $600,000 worth of improvements downtown. More than half of that came from private investments by property owners.

During the council meeting, members authorized the filing of the grant application.

As for the new attitude on Main Street Andrews said, “If you want to be on Main Street, let’s have some pride and look like you want to be on Main Street.”

“Try to be a part of Main Street. Don’t just exist,” she said, adding that business owners should try to make their storefronts look nice, and try to encourage people to come into their buildings.

“It’s not only good for Main Street, but it’s good for the individual businesses,” Andrews said.

Roessler also told council that the Downtown Partnership Committee is reaching out beyond the Bradford area to the Olean and Buffalo areas, trying to bring businesses downtown. She said they are also reaching out to the University of Pittsburgh and Bradford and area hospitals to try to fill up downtown storefronts. Roessler added that the façade improvement grants will help this effort because property owners will be able to get help in fixing up their buildings.

During the regular council meeting, members approved the transfer of a liquor license from Mount Jewett to The AUD at 30 Boylston Street. No one from the public had a comment on the transfer.

Council also approved a $15,835 contract with Olson Contracting and Construction for the demolition and site clearance of 19-23 Pine Street. The project is funded through a DCED Housing & Redevelopment Assistance Grant.

And, council appointed Preston Abbey to the city’s board of appeals. Abbey will fill the unexpired term of Fred Hemingway. The terms ends in January 2014.
