SBU President to be Honored as
Olean Elks Lodge Citizen of the Year

The officers and members of Olean Elks Lodge #491 will honor Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., president of St. Bonaventure University, as their “Citizen of the Year” at a dinner to be held on Saturday, March 31.

Each Lodge is encouraged to select a citizen, not necessarily an Elk, who has contributed in a special way to improving the local community. This individual should be someone who has shown leadership in the community; has contributed voluntary service; and is recognized as being an all-around good citizen.

Sr. Margaret was selected for this recognition because of her continuous, untiring community involvement. In December 2010, during the re-location process of the Warming House, Sr. Margaret commended the citizens of Olean for coming forward and giving their opinions, whether in favor of or against the re-location of the Warming House. She thanked the Olean community for the opportunity to hear their concerns. In 2008 at the GOACC Annual Awards Dinner, the chairman of St. Bonaventure’s Board of Trustees, John “Jack” McGinley, commented, in part, “Olean and Bonaventure are interchangeable.”

As one of our nation’s premier Franciscan universities, recognized for its academic programs, student-centered learning environment and entrepreneurial service orientation, St. Bonaventure shares the story of our region’s many attributes with prospective students, families, alumni, corporations, foundations and granting agencies throughout the nation and the world. It offers our children educational opportunities close to home, and holds an academic heritage that has served as a springboard to thousands of successful and rewarding careers. With more than $25 million in campus enhancements since Sr. Margaret’s inauguration in the fall of 2004, the University continues to be a center for education, culture and recreation for our area and beyond.

The Elks Lodge will also honor Lodge member Carolyn Torrey as the “Elk of the Year” and Leola Strang, the Lodge’s Tiler, as this year’s “Officer of the Year.”

The Elk of the Year Awards Dinner will be held at the Lodge, 209 W. State St., on Saturday, March 31, beginning with hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Reservations are required. The public is invited and may call the Lodge at (716) 372-4191 at the following time to make dinner reservations: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
Reservations will be accepted until March 26. For more information, please contact Yvonne Peace at 716-373-3457 or via email. The cost of the dinner is $20. Following dinner, music by DJ Destiny will be provided in the upstairs lounge.
