Hoffmann Named Dean of
St. Bonaventure's Journalism School

Pauline Hoffmann, Ph.D., has been named dean of the Russsell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication at St. Bonaventure University, said Michael Fischer, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs.

The appointment is effective immediately.

Hoffmann, an associate professor of journalism and mass communication, had been interim dean of the Jandoli School this academic year. She succeeds Lee Coppola, who retired at the end of the 2010-11 academic year after 15 years as dean.

“It is an exciting time to lead the School of Journalism and Mass Communication,” said Hoffmann. “As an SBU alumna, I understand our unique challenges and our enormous strengths. I will continue to lead in the tradition of Dr. Jandoli with an emphasis on strong writing, reporting and communicating.”

Prior to her faculty career at St. Bonaventure, she was the corporate communications manager for The CRS Companies in Williamsville, N.Y., creative services specialist for the Catholic Health System (now Catholic Health), and served as a free-lance consultant for organizations such as Catholic Health, Buffalo Women’s Gifts, and the Health Care Access Coalition.

In addition to her teaching experience at St. Bonaventure, she has also served as a visiting instructor for the University at Buffalo. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in communication from the University at Buffalo in 2003 and 2007, respectively, and her bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in mass communication from St. Bonaventure in 1991.

Hoffmann was the founding faculty adviser to Embrace It Africa, a St. Bonaventure student organization-turned nonprofit organization that involves students in entrepreneurial service programs in Uganda. She now serves as an advisory board member for the organization.

Hoffmann has served as a member of the University’s Faculty Senate, where she also chaired the Enrollment Committee and served as the Faculty Senate representative to the University Board of Trustees Enrollment Committee. She is the owner of Wild Mountain Organics of Alden.

“We are delighted with what Dr. Hoffmann accomplished in her year as interim dean, and look forward to the leadership she will provide for the Jandoli School,” said Fischer. “Her professional communication experience, coupled with her teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, will serve her well in this important role.”

Two Arrested on Drug Charges

Two people were arrested on drug charges after state police got a report about unauthorized use of a vehicle. Troopers found the vehicle in Randolph on Wednesday and arrested the driver, 31-year-old Bridget Bardo of Conewango, for aggravated unlicensed operation and criminal possession of a controlled substance. She was released on her own recognizance and scheduled to appear in Town of Randolph Court. Her passenger, 28-year-old Andrew Jaquish of Salamanca, was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance.
