Man Accused of Assaulting Cops, Breaking
into Guidance Center Appears in Court

The man accused of breaking into The Guidance Center Monday and then assaulting two police officers was arraigned today in District Court.

When police arrived at the West Washington Street home of 41-year-old Richard Miller to arrest him for the burglary they saw him lying on his couch. After they knocked on the door, they saw him look to see who it was, then go back to the couch and lie down again with his back to the door, according to papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone’s office.

When police went into the house Miller allegedly kicked Officer Shayne Miller in the knee and upper thigh and threw an ashtray that hit Officer Tony Lama in the chest.

Lama used a Taser on Miller but it had no effect and he charged at the officers and pushed over a television, trying to hit Officer Miller with it. Lama used the Taser again, but again it had no effect. The officers took Miller to the ground, but he continued to fight them. The officers also used pepper spray to try to subdue him, but that didn’t work either.

The officers eventually calmed him down, took him into custody and charged him with burglary, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking and two counts of aggravated assault, along with a couple of misdemeanors for each incident.

During the course of their investigation of the burglary police learned Miller had been “disputing many issues with The Guidance Center staff over the last few weeks,” according to court papers.

Miller is jailed on $5,000 bail each for the burglary and assaults. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 5 in Central Court.
