Current Bradford Area High School assistant principal David Ray will be the school’s new principal and current principal Ken Coffman will hold the newly created position of Dean of Students at the school.

The moves were made during Monday’s Bradford Area School Board meeting are effective July 1. Both positions have an annual salary of $85,662.

Also during Monday’s meeting the board officially approved the 2012-13 general fund budget.

“This is our 11th year without a tax increase,” said business manager Kathy Boyd. “I think that’s pretty nice.”

She said putting the budget together did not come without its challenges from the state because the basic instruction subsidy is the equal to the amount the district received in 2008-09; this is the second year there is no reimbursement for charter school students (the district has 51); this is the fifth year special education has been level-funded while costs have increased; and the PA Accountability Grant has been eliminated.

Monday was the last meeting for school district superintendent Sandra Romanowski, who is retiring. In lieu of her formal superintendent’s report she simply, but tearfully, said, “I would like to thank the board, the amazing administrative team and the staff of the district for a wonderful 10 years. Thank you. It’s been an honor.”

Her last day of work will be June 30. Current assistant superintendent Katy Pude will take over on July 1.

Also Monday, Romanowski recognized volunteer Ron Johnson for the work he has done in planting flowers outside of the district’s buildings. David Rhinehart, Yosef Azziz and Natalie Frisina were recognized for earning medals at the recent PIAA Track & Field Championships. Bob Esch of American Refining Group and Betsey Aiello and Jane Barnes of the Bradford Oil and Gas Charity were recognized for the Governor’s Education Workforce Leadership Award they and the district received for their partnership. They have provided guidance and financial support for the district’s oil and gas curriculum. Minard Run Oil and the Pennsylvania Independent Oil and Gas Association are also involved in the partnership.

In other matters, Pudy and Kelly Compton announced that the district has received an $879,250 Keystone Opportunity Grant to help improve literacy in the district. (WESB and The Hero will have details on this program later this week.)

The school board also accepted the resignations of special education teachers Linda Walter and Patricia Lindstrom, who are retiring after 37 and 36 years respectively; elementary school teacher Patricia Arrowsmith, who is retiring after 17 years; and pre-K teacher Kate Vinelli who has been with the district for eight years.

The board approved the hiring of Amber Benjamin, Jason Blatchley, Kristy Kinney, Amy Krepp, Kristy Moore, Clay Nolan, Brittany Skiba and Heather Wright. Their employment is effect August 21.

Board member Tim Bean said he wanted to recognize and celebrate the contributions the late Rick Benton made to the school district and the community.

Why do we need a Dean of Students?

I think there is more to the principal move than the public knows. Mr. Coffman is an excellent principal and from this community. Sounds like politics to me. New superintendent brings new principal.
