Cardboard Boat Regatta at McCrea Point

JAMESTOWN, NY, JUNE 28, 2012 – The Arts Council for Chautauqua County and the Reg Lenna Civic Center are hosting a fun day of cardboard boat racing at McCrea Point to benefit their organizations.

On August 18th, starting at 9:30 a.m., teams will be registering to compete in Chautauqua Lake’s outlet for fastest time, most creative design, crowd favorite, and most dramatic sinking. Teams compete in the following age brackets: adult (18+), teen (13-17), and youth (8-12). The display and judging of boats begins at 10 a.m. and the first race launches at noon. Admission is free for spectators.

Racing participants will construct a “human-powered” boat made of corrugated cardboard or 100% recycled materials, that will hold at least 1 crew member and be “seaworthy” enough to race a short distance in the outlet. Racers must construct their boats ahead of time and everyone is encouraged to let their imaginations run wild by putting considerable artistic flair into both boats and costumes. As artistic organizations, we hope to see dragon boats, cartoon cars, and pirate ships all appearing at the starting line on August 18th. A list of rules, registration forms, and hints to get started with your boat building are available at www.artscouncil.com or by calling 716-397-1360. Registration forms and fees can be dropped off at the Reg; Lenna Civic Center Box office on Tuesday-Friday from 1-5 p.m. or mailed to the Reg Lenna Civic Center Box Office at 116 East 3rd Street, Jamestown, NY. The entry fee per team is $30 before July 15th and $40 after that date. Early registration is encouraged.

During race preparations, there will be music playing, plenty of food and drink, games, and terrific photo opportunities in a fun-filled day for all. Individuals, families, groups, businesses, and school teams are encouraged to race. Whether you attend as a crew member, the captain, or an on-shore spectator, we promise you a day you’ll never forget. Come celebrate a day of creative boat building by watching dozens of brave mariners negotiate the outlet each hoping to avoid a soggy sinking feeling along the way.
