Col. Mary Kathryn Fesenmyer

Mary Kathryn Fesenmyer, 92 of 20535 Earhhart Place, PotomacFalls, VA, formerly of Bradford, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Johnson Center-Falcon's Landing in Potomac Falls.

She was born in Bradford, on December 3, 1920, a daughter of the late William Clarence and Mary (Wharton) Fesenmyer.

Colonel Fesenmyer attended Custer City School from 1926 to 1934 and graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1939. She graduated from Seton Hill College in Greensburg in 1942 with a degree in home economic. She later attended UCLA and received her Masters Degree in public health.

She interned as a hospital dietitian at St. Marys Hospital in Detroit Michigan, assisted at St. Francis Hospital in Allegany, NY and at Olean General in Olean, also had been employed as a hospital dietitian at Montefiure Hospital in New York City. She served at Ashford General Hospital in White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia, and while there administered to the needs of General McArthur and General Wainwright.

She started her military career in 1944 when she enlisted in the United States Army as a 2nd Lt. and was honorably discharged in 1947. She then enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 and retired in 1979 from a career of service that spanned from World War II, Korean War, the Cuban Missile crisis and the Vietnam War. She had been stationed in England, Philippines and here in the US.

Her most exciting duty was in the scientific research activities when it has been determined there was a military mission in space. For a brief period she was given an additional duty at the School of Aerospace Medicine to participate in the ongoing research of physiological needs of man in space.

She was a member of AFROC and a charter member of Falcon's Landing. She Received professional recognition by the American Dietetic Association at the annual meeting in 1995 for 50 years of active membership.

As her friends have heard her say many times "I am red, white and blue inside and out".

Colonel Fesenmyer was awarded several medals and ribbons of decoration, including the Meritorious Service Medal.

She served twice as president of The Catholic Daughters of America.

She is survived by 12 nieces and nephews and six great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends are invited to call from 3-5 PM, Tuesday, January 14, 2012 in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc., South Avenue where funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday, January 16, 2013 with Rev. Raymond Gramata, pastor of St. Bernard Parish, officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.
