Elderly Woman Escapes Burning Home

An 83-year-old Olean woman was able to escape her burning home early this morning.

City firefighters were called to the North Ninth Street home at about 3:35 a.m. The owner, Mary Smith, was out of the house when firefighters arrived.

About 23 Olean firefighters battled the blaze with help from Allegany and Westons Mills.

They believe an electrical malfunction caused the fire, but investigators are still looking into that.
