Accused Wife Beater Headed to Court

Charges against the Bradford man who pulled a chunk of hair out of his wife’s head and then threatened to kill her and the police officers who responded to the incident have been bound to McKean County Court.

42-year-old Richard Buterbaugh is accused of breaking into his estranged wife’s home and assaulting her to the point that she had to be taken to BRMC by ambulance. According to papers filed in district judge Dominic Cercone’s office, the hair pulled from the woman’s head may result in long-term disfigurement. She already had a protection from abuse order against him, which he previously violated. He was out on parole for that violation.

When police arrived on the scene Buterbaugh attempted to tackle one officer and struggled with two officers as they were trying to handcuff him. A third officer had to use a stun gun on him. Buterbaugh was also taken to BRMC for cuts to his hands, but was then threatening to kill the police officers and ER staff. While fighting with police, who had to hold him down, he was screaming that he had been drinking and doing cocaine all night at a local bar.

He remains in McKean County Jail on $100,000 bail following today's preliminary hearing.
