2 Roses

Image
Ever since I can remember I've read more than one book at a time. A few years ago, a co-worker asked me how I can do that and keep the stories straight. I asked him a question in return: How can you watch six or seven  TV shows and keep them all straight? Same concept.  With that said, strangely enough, in all the decades I have had more than one book going at a time I have never had two characters with the same name at the same time. Now I do. Two Roses. But it's still not hard to keep the stories straight. Reviews to come soon, I think. Both books are really good so far.

Hulu Views: Spencer

Image
Most people who are scratching their heads about Kristen Stewart's Oscar nomination probably haven't seen the movie “Spencer” in which she embodies the spirit of Princess Diana. The film, which tells us it's “A fable from a true tragedy,” is a fictionalized account of the three-day Christmas holiday at Sandringham during which Diana realizes she can't stay married to Charles and keep her sanity. It features several dream/fantasy/hallucination sequences, including a few with Anne Boleyn, with whom Diana begins to identify. Another is when Diana is forced to wear the pearls Charles gave her for Christmas, knowing that he gave Camilla Parker Bowles the same necklace. At dinner, with the royal family staring at her, she pulls the necklace off and the pearls fall onto the table and into her soup. She spoons them up and crunches them. Weird, but an understandable analogy knowing what we know now about what she went through during that time. The film focuses quite

Book Review: Billy Summers by Stephen King

Image
It took me a while to get into this book (I even set it aside for a couple of months) but once I got past the first 75 or so pages, I was hooked. Billy Summers is a gun-for-hire who only kills bad people who deserve to be killed, and has just been hired for what he decides will be his last job. The glaring foreshadowing lets us know that something will go wrong, but it is a Stephen King book so we already know it's not going to be all rainbows and roses. While Billy is waiting for his target to be extradited his cover is as an author working on a new book. As he's writing his life story he realizes that he actually is a good story-teller and may want to pursue it further. Also while he's waiting, he creates another persona in case he needs a backup plan after the hit. Spoiler alert: He does. Billy also develops relationships with the neighbors in both of his temporary homes as both of his aliases. As these relationships develop it's interesting to think about h
