Penn Soil RC&D Council announced today the completion of the paving of the Riverside Watchable Wildlife Trail and the receipt of a $5,000 donation from Shell Appalachia in support of the project at the Big Bend Recreation Area at the Kinzua Dam. Wes Ramsey, Executive Director of Penn Soil RC&D, Doug Helman, Kinzua Dam Resource Manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Bill Massa, special projects coordinator of the Allegheny Outdoor Club (AOC), accepted the contribution on behalf of the project partners from Becki Ivancic, Communications Representative and Joe Minnitte, Community Liaison Officer with Shell Appalachia. MOUNT JEWETT – Paving work will get underway Monday on Hutchins Drive in the Hutchins area of McKean County. The work zone stretches for about one mile in Sergeant Township, south of the McKean County Landfill. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday crews will perform full-depth reclamation work, with the addition of a cement stabilization agent. Flaggers will be in the road to direct an alternating traffic pattern. Motorists need to remain alert for flaggers, sudden stops, and short travel delays. When work is complete, this section of the road will re-open to two-way traffic. Once the road treatment cures, a three-inch asphalt overlay will be placed. That paving is scheduled for the week of Oct. 7, weather permitting. Completion of the overlay work is expected by Oct. 12. All work is weather and schedule dependent. Allan A. Shell Oil has chosen Pennsylvania for the site of its new multi-billion-dollar petrochemical refinery. Dan Carlson, Shell's General Manager of New Business Development, said today the company signed a land option agreement with Horsehead Corp. to evaluate a site near Monaca, about 35 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today urged Shell Oil Company to bring a natural gas processing facility to Pennsylvania, which could create thousands of jobs and leverage billions of dollars in private investment to the region. Shell is considering locations to construct a large facility to break down natural gas, which is abundant in Pennsylvania, into substances used to produce plastics, fibers, and automotive products, which would also boost Pennsylvania manufacturing. “Pennsylvania is at the epicenter of the rapidly growing Marcellus shale natural gas industry, making it the ideal location for a processing plant that will create thousands of local jobs,” said Senator Casey. “Pennsylvania has the skilled workers, natural resources and innovative research network needed to support this plant and boost Pennsylvania’s economy.” Shell is considering building the plant, called an ethane cracker, in the northeast so it can process gas extracted from the Marcellus shale fo...

Shell Oil says it’s planning to build what’s called a cracker that will process ethane from the Marcellus Shale natural gas, but hasn’t decided yet where to build it. A cracker breaks down large molecules from oil and natural gas into smaller molecules that are used to manufacture chemicals, according to a news release. The cracker would be used to turn ethane into ethylene, a key component used to make petrochemicals. Polyethylene is used in packaging, adhesives, auto components and other products. Shell says building such a facility would provide a local outlet for ethane, which is a byproduct in the natural gas drilling process. A Pittsburgh-area energy producer, and major player in the Marcellus Shale region, is selling the company for $4.7 billion Europe’s largest oil company. East Resources Inc. will be sold for cash and subsequently hand over about 650,000 net acres of Marcellus Shale land to Royal Dutch Shell PLC. About 1.05 million acres in total will change hands. East Resources employs about 300 people, who will continue working for the company. Shell executives say they plan to expand the regional East Resources offices with more workers. East Resources produces the natural-gas equivalent of nearly 10,000 barrels of oil per day.
