The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will apply treatments the evenings of Tuesday, June 17 in Eldred Borough and Eldred Township and Wednesday, June 18 in Eldred and Kane boroughs, and Eldred and Wetmore townships to control adult mosquito populations. The treatments will be administered by truck and ATV-mounted spray equipment to spray open spaces in residential and recreational areas. The equipment dispenses Biomist 3+15 applied at a rate of 0.75 ounces per acre. These products are designed to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations. The application materials have a very low toxicity profile to mammals and are safe for the environment. Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile Virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile Encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. Charges are pending against an Eldred man whose vehicle hit a utility pole and then came to rest against a house early Sunday morning. Police say 24-year-old Jeffrey Lawhead was on Route 346 in Eldred Township when his vehicle went off the road, and then hit the pole and the house. An SUV caught on fire this afternoon in Eldred Township, but no one was hurt. Police say the driver, who they did not identify, told them he smelled smoke in the cabin of the vehicle and then pulled on the berm of Route 446, got out and tried to open the hood. Wind had its way with some trees earlier today. Late this morning near Marilla Reservoir a tree fell onto West Washington Street, blocking one lane of traffic. A tree also fell onto Pine Grove Road in Port Allegany, blocking the road. At around 3 p.m. a tree fell on a car on Indian Creek Road in Eldred Township, causing the car to go into a ditch. No one was hurt. In Chautauqua County, a tree fell onto the roof of a Westfield house. No one was hurt. Tonight will be windy, too, with gusts as high as 40 miles an hour. Lane restrictions will be in effect as crossing near Larabee is repaired ELDRED – Work to repair a railroad crossing on Route 446 in Eldred Township is scheduled for Thursday, April 24 and Friday, April 25. Crews from the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad will be working to repair a rail at the crossing, located between the villages of Coryville and Larabee. An alternating traffic pattern will be in place, enforced by flaggers in the roadway and crossing. Area drivers should expect short delays as this work takes place. All work is weather dependent.
