With all the national media attention each October, it helps remind woman of this critical screen for breast cancer and that early detection is the best protection. There is a “1 in 8” lifetime risk for women to develop this cancer. Recently the Mammography Program at KCH was again successfully registered indicating that the program, it’s digital mammography equipment and technologists are doing everything right and meet all standards for optimal care. In addition to a top program, KCH is blessed with a Chief of Radiology – Jamil Sarfraz, M.D. – who has a special interest in breast health and is American Board Certified not only in Diagnostic Radiology, but also in Nuclear Medicine and Internal Medicine. Refreshments are served. October 1 is the second of three ArtWorks First Fridays and features two local wood artists: wood turner Jack Northrop of Kane and wood intarsia artist Rob Hart from Clarendon. Both Northrop and Hart are juried PA Wilds Artisans and Gallery Artists at ArtWorks. Jack Northrop…“I turn bowls knowing each piece is going to be different. I let the wood tell me what I'm going to make out of it. I may start out with one idea and end up with a completely different piece. It’s addictive,” says Northrop of his art. “I use local hardwoods and salvage (or scrap) wood for my art; black cherry, walnut, maple, butternut, locust, sumac and others. I use pieces left from logging -- pieces left in the woods after timbering, pieces from veneer logs ...

On Wednesday, Kane Community Hospital (KCH), an affiliate of Hamot Health Foundation, held a celebration to honor employee participation in the Tenth Anniversary of the Kane Area Relay for Life. The celebration began in the Gardens at KCH where J. Gary Rhodes, CEO of KCH and Mark Papalia, Director of Operations grilled hot dogs and hamburgers for hospital staff. In his remarks to those gathered for a pre-luncheon ceremony, Rhodes commented that it was a most appropriate place to remember and to celebrate the many triumphs of cancer research and care. The Gardens at KCH were created after the loss of long time nurse Patti Zook (who suggested gardens at the Hospital) after her courageous fight with cancer. After her passing, many more KCH colleagues followed, Rhodes noted, remembering each and the toll cancer has levied on the Hospital and throughout the Kane Area. Rhodes reminded team members and staff that KCH’s involvement with the American Cancer Society’s signature event ...

Tuesday night organizers for this year’s Kane Area Relay for Life (RFL) produced two floats for Thursday's mega parade (6 p.m. on Fraley Street in Uptown Kane) with the theme “Celebrating Birthdays” complete with picnic table for partying, tons of gifts and candles for the cake. Organizers hope everyone in the area will come out and support this effort. Bring the whole family, invite your neighbors, colleagues and friends to the parade and Friday-Saturday event. The parade will include walkers from the 20 plus teams, Zem Zem cars, floats, music, Miss Relay Contestants, dignitaries, fire department, The Twin Tiers Action Van (with Igor and Anne) and local businesses and much more. The parade is the kickoff event of Relay for Life that begins noon Friday and runs until noon Saturday at the Kane Area High School Track.
