The improvements to Downtown Bradford keep on coming, and plans are in the works to step up the fight against blight in residential areas as well. City Council on Tuesday authorized loans to Rookies to building a deck and pave two parking lots; Shelley Wright to fix the roof on 80-82 Main Street (Wright’s Music Shed); and The Aud to buy the Boylston Street building the restaurant currently occupies. Even City Hall is getting a face lift. Council approved a payment to Shembeda Floor Covering to install carpeting on the front steps of the building and Room 103. They also awarded a bid to Hennard Construction for renovations to the third floor, including city council chambers. More than $3,000 in cash and checks has been stolen from the American Legion in Sugar Grove. Police say someone broke a window in the back of the building between 1:30 and 1:50 Sunday morning. Surveillance video shows that the person made his way to the safe, where he used a tool to cut the hinges off, grabbed the cash bags that were inside and then left through the window he had broken to get in. The suspect was wearing a Halloween-like mask and hood covering his or her face, and was carrying a red case. Members of American Legion Post 108 in Bradford participated in a flag-raising ceremony this morning at Chapel Ridge. The flag was raised to the top of the pole, then immediately lowered to half-staff in recognition of Patriot Day. State Representative Marty Causer, who donated the new flag, was on hand for the ceremony and said we should always remember the sacrifices emergency responders made on September 11, 2001, and be thankful for the first responders we have. The McKean County American Legion Riders Post 976 out of Crosby, PA, rode to Bradford Regional Medical Center on Saturday, June 8th to deliver their annual donation to the Melissa A. Price McKean County VNA Children’s Bereavement Camp Fund. This fund supports the "Helping Hands Retreat" bereavement day camp. The annual bereavement retreat, which is free of charge, provides emotional counseling and support to children – ages seven though 12 – who are grieving from the loss of a family member, friend or even a family pet. Children with parents going through a divorce, or who have experienced any significant life-altering event, may also attend. The Helping Hands Retreat combines fun events with therapeutic activities, allowing children to recognize the various emotional aspects of the grieving process. In observance of Memorial Day, Mrs. Denise O’Neil will lead 3rd, 4th and 5th grade St. Bernard's School students as they assist the local American Legion Post #108 in placing American flags on the graves of fallen soldiers in St. Bernard Cemetery on Thursday, May 24, 2012. The students will start at 12:30PM and finish at 2PM. O’Neil, a 32 year veteran teacher at SBS, along with her father, Clair D. Butler, Adjutant of The American Legion, Post #108 will set out to mark close to 1,300 graves in St. Bernard Cemetery. Butler is a Korean War Veteran, serving from 1952 to 1954 and has teamed up with the young students for three years. "Being able to include the students in this commemorative and civic exercise is a real life illustration of what service for others means. Why our freedom is so precious. State Police are investigating a theft of money from the American Legion Post in Crosby. They say about $3,200 was taken from the John Berg American Legion Post 976 in June. Police say no other details are available at this time.

Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson today introduced H.R. 1832, the Servicemembers’ Telemedicine & E-Health Portability (STEP) Act. The STEP Act will expand the current Department of Defense (DOD) state licensure exemption to allow credentialed health care professionals to work across state borders without having to obtain a new state license. “Members of our military should receive 21st century care and access to treatment regardless of the circumstances and Congress needs to make good on that commitment,” said Thompson. “This legislation removes out-dated requirements under current law so that geographic location is no longer an obstacle to the delivery of care for our Servicemembers.” Currently, the Department of Defense has limited ability to allow its health care professionals to provide care when the patient is in a different state. HARRISBURG – The state American Legion praised the Pennsylvania Gaming Board’s decision yesterday to “protect the sanctity of the Gettysburg National Military Park” by denying a developer’s bid for a nearby casino. By a 6-1, the Gaming Board decided to award the license to another location, the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, in the southwestern part of the state. “Many Legionnaires, veterans and concerned Americans across the country did not want to see a casino built so close to the final resting place of so many heroes,” said Pennsylvania American Legion Commander Pete Wasco. “While many local residents supported the project, the battlefield has national significance. At the same time, people are understandably concerned about unemployment and other economic issues. The American Legion supports development in Adams County and other areas that need it.
