SBU's Schmidt Named Sporting News
Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year

Image
St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt was chosen by staff writers and editors at Sporting News as the Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year, the publication announced on its website Tuesday. Schmidt guided the Bonnies to a 17-11 overall record, going 10-6 in conference play in 2011-12. The 17 wins tied a career best for Schmidt -- who went 17-11 with Robert Morris during the 2006-07 season prior to his arrival – and rank as the most for the Brown and White since the 2001-02 season (17-13). The 10-6 standing in A-10 play was enough to tie Xavier for third in the conference and the fourth seed – along with a first-round bye – in the A-10 Championship this weekend in Atlantic City, N.J. It also marked just the third season in program history with 10 conference wins, and the first since the 1999-2000 squad went 11-5 en route to the NCAA Tournament. Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Andrew Nicholson, a Schmidt recruit, leads the conference in points per game (17.9) and ranks second in reb...

The senior also earned his second consecutive First Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team plaudits. He became the first player ever in the Atlantic 10 to earn four straight Player of the Week awards, putting the finishing touches on a regular season that included his 2,000th career point, seven double-doubles, the first 20-20 game since Bob Lanier in 1967, his 200th career block and the Bonnies' best win percentage since 1999-00. Bonnies Clinch A-10 Bye
With 2OT Win Over Saint Joseph's

Image
Andrew Nicholson bolstered his bid for Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, leading St. Bonaventure (17-10, 10-5) to a 98-93 double-overtime win over Saint Joseph's (19-12, 9-7) at the Reilly Center. Nicholson scored 32 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and made a barrage of clutch 3s to carry the Bonnies to a gutty, back-and-forth victory. The win, paired with Temple's overtime victory against UMass, guarantees SBU a top-four seed and a bye in the Atlantic 10 Championship in Atlantic City, N.J. March 9-11. An instant classic, the whole game was played within a six-point window with 14 lead changes and 18 ties. SBU bombed away three 3-pointers in four possessions of the second and final overtime - one from Nicholson, who canned three of five treys – to open up its biggest lead of the game with 90 seconds left. It was just enough to keep in front of a Saint Joseph's team in the hunt for a top-four seed of its own. Getting there, though, was an adventure. The Bonnies, who now own the A-...

Nicholson Shines in Bona Win

Image
St. Bonaventure's Andrew Nicholson posted 21 points and 23 rebounds to mark the school's first 20-20 double double on record since Bob Lanier's 34-and-27 Dec. 22, 1967, as St. Bonaventure (13-9, 6-4) defeated Duquesne (14-10, 5-5) 69-48 at the Reilly Center. Nicholson's effort on the glass ranks as the third-best single-game total in school history behind 27-, 24-, and 23-rebound games from Lanier, a member of the Naismith Hall of Fame. The Mississauga, Ont. native joins Bona basketball icons Lanier, Glen Price (21-20) and Essie Hollis (21) as the only other players in school history to grab 20 or more boards in a single game. After a slow start, the Bonnies overcame a five-point deficit and used an extended 18-4 first-half run to take control for good. Nicholson, who booked 11 points and 15 boards over the final 20 minutes, had 10 and eight by the intermission, with Chris Johnson adding 12 of his 15 in the opening frame. Eric Mosley finished with 12 points, including a...
