Gerrit Cole struck out 10 batters in 8 1/3 innings to lead the Pirates to a 4-1 win over the Mets Friday night. He gave up only six hits – all singles – and lowered his ERA to 2.05. Chris Stewart had two hits and an RBI for Pittsburgh. Jung Ho Kang, Pedro Alvarez and Gregory Polanco also drove in runs as the Pirates dropped New York to 7-13 on the road. Prince Fielder smacked two homers, drove in four runs and helped the Texas Rangershold off the New York Yankees 10-9 Friday night for their third straight win. The Yankees have lost four in a row and eight of nine. Brandon Moss homered and drove in three runs, while Carlos Carrasco allowed two runs in six innings to help the Indians earn a 7-3 win over Cincinnati. It was Cleveland’s fourth win in a row and sixth in eight games. Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1. The Phillies have lost three of four after winning six in a row. Bradford High’s Ashton McGriff broke the school record in the 400 during Friday’s PIAA Track & Field championships in Shippensburg. She not only broke the previous record set in 1996 – she shattered it by nearly a full second. And, she’s only a freshman. Unfortunately, she just missed out on a berth in the finals. Rick Nash scored twice and was dominant in the New York Rangers’ 5-1 win in Game 4 over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Rangers’ win evened the NHL Eastern Conference finals at two games apiece. ~~~ LeBron James had his 74th 30-point game in his postseason career, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 94-82 win over the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA’s Eastern Conference finals. The Cavs are now up 2-0 in the series. The 30-point game ties James with Jerry West for fourth on the all-time list. Only Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant andKareem Abdul-Jabbar have more. After a week during which he won two games with buzzer-beating shots, St. Bonaventure junior guard Marcus Posley has earned multiple Player of the Week honors. Posley's remarkable performances caught the attention of the national media. He was named national Player of the Week by ESPN college basketball reporter Andy Katz as part of his weekly "3-Point Shot" segment on ESPN.com. Posley was also named national Player of the Week by CBSsports.com college basketball insider Gary Parrish and "Mr. Big Shot" by USA Today writer Scott Gleeson. He also was selected SB Nation Mid-Major Madness Player of the Week. In addition, Posley was selected the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week and the Big 4 Player of the Week. ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Fibertech Networks will present the Fibertech Conference Classic men's basketball game between St. Bonaventure University and George Mason University in January, it was announced on Wednesday. The Fibertech Conference Classic will be played Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. The announcement was made by Director of Athletics Steve Watson during St. Bonaventure's annual Basketball Coaches Caravan Luncheon at what will be the site of the game, Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester. The Bonnies have been regulars at Blue Cross Arena, hosting eight games there since 2000, but this will be their first time hosting an Atlantic 10 Conference game there. Fibertech also sponsored all eight of the prior games. St. Bonaventure's last game at Blue Cross Arena was a win over Niagara on Nov. 24, 2012. On Thursday the Bradford Area High School volleyball team will join thousands of teams from around the country participating in this year's Side-Out Foundation's Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally . Senior players Jessica Buchheit, Hailey Burgess, Courtney Henry, Courtney Holzwarth, Rylee Lundgren and Marissa Yohe are organizing the event as a voluntary community service project. Their team is one of manymiddle school, high school and college teams promoting breast health education in the community as well as raising funds to further research. Dig Pink events give spectators the opportunity to become involved by making donations to the cause and by ?pinking out? the events -wearing pink to show their support. Thursday's event be held in conjunction with the team's match against Elk County Catholic High School. The JV game will start at 6 p.m. with the varsity match to follow. St. Bonaventure's women's soccer game against Kent State this Sunday, Aug. 24, has been moved to Bradford Area High School's Parkway Field. The start time will remain 1 p.m. The change was necessary because crews are still completing renovations to St. Bonaventure's McGraw-Jennings Field. The work is expected to be finished in time for the Bonnies' next scheduled home game on Aug. 27. While installation of the new turf should be done by the end of this week, there have been delays, mainly weather-related, with other work. Mo’Ne Davis needed only 70 pitches to shut out Tennessee in the opening round of the Little League World Series – and get herself into the record books in the process. The 13-year-old became the first girl to pitch a winning game in series. She allowed two hits, struck out eight and didn’t walk anyone in the six-inning complete game victory. Her phenomenal play is getting some attention from big leaguers – including the Pirates’ Andrew McCutcheon who tweeted to her that he was pulling for her and her teammates on the Taney Dragons from the Philadelphia area. Local high school girls and their coaches will participate in sporting event programs throughout the day with St. Bonaventure’s female student-athletes and staff. The event, sponsored by the School of Education, the Department of Physical Education, the Department of Athletics, the Department of Military Science and the Visiting Scholars Program, will host 15 school districts including 400 women student-athletes along with their coaches and teachers. Students from the following school districts will attend: Allegany-Limestone, Archbishop Walsh, Austin Area Schools, Bath, Bolivar-Richburg, Bradford, Cuba-Rushford, Fillmore, Franklinville, Jamestown-Lutheran, Portville, Randolph, Seneca Nation, South Park and Southwestern. The Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) today announced that Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen has been named the 2013 National League Most Valuable Player. McCutchen is the sixth different player in Pirates history to receive the award since it was created in 1931, joining Dick Groat (1960), Roberto Clemente (1966), Dave Parker (1978), Willie Stargell (1979 - tied with Keith Hernandez) and Barry Bonds (1990 and 1992). Hall-of-Famer Paul Waner also received the National League Most Valuable Player Citation in 1927. The 27-year-old McCutchen hit .317 with 38 doubles, five triples, 21 home runs, 84 RBI, 97 runs scored and 27 stolen bases in 157 games in 2013 while leading the Pirates to the postseason for the first time since 1992. Four St. Bonaventure University student-athletes were selected to the Preseason All-Big 4 Basketball Teams, which were unveiled Monday at First Niagara Arena during the Big 4 Media Day. On the women’s side, sophomore Katie Healy was named to the first team while senior Chelsea Bowker was selected to the second team. For the men, senior Matthew Wright and junior Youssou Ndoye were both named to the second team. Healy, who is a native of Lancaster, N.Y., is the Bonnies’ top returner in both scoring (8.6 points per game) and rebounding (5.6). The 6-foot-1 forward also blocked a team-high 38 shots last season as a freshman. Bowker did not play in 2012-13 due to an ankle injury. In the Bonnies’ Sweet 16 season of 2011-12, Bowker played in all 33 games and averaged 7.2 points per contest. She holds a career .397 three-point shooting percentage. ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – On Saturday, Nov. 16, the St. Bonaventure Department of Athletics will induct four former student-athletes into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame. The Class of 2013 will be J.R. Bremer ’02 (basketball), Mikko Haulos '03 (tennis), Vili Nurmi ’03 (tennis) and Tricia Hildebrand-Fisher ’03 (softball). The induction ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. in Rigas Theater inside the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The event is open to the public. Bremer One of the great guards in SBU history, Bremer ranks among the school’s all-time leaders in points (1,732, 9th), 3-pointers made (223, 2nd), steals (185, 6th), assists (334, 8th) and free-throw percentage (75.2, 14th). Something special will be happening before tonight’s Karns City High School football game. Hall of Fame and former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly will be recognized as part of the hall’s effort to honor the hometown roots of its members. Kelly will take part in the coin toss before the game, present the school with a check, and be honored with a plaque that will stay at the school. Signs will be erected throughout East Brady, where Kelly went to school, and Karns City, welcoming visitors to the home of Jim Kelly. The events are taking place in Karns City because East Brady High School closed about 20 years ago. On a side note, Karns City beat Franklin last week 62-7. Franklin is visiting the Owls tonight. After capturing medalist honors at last weekend's Little 3 Championship, St. Bonaventure redshirt sophomore Darren Simons has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Golfer of the Week. Simons led the Bonnies to the title of the 60th annual Little 3 event, which was played on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Pine Acres Golf Club in Bradford. St. Bonaventure finished nine shots ahead of Canisius (593) and well in front of Niagara. Simons, a native of St. Marys, opened with a five-under par 67 in the morning round, then carded a 73 in the afternoon for a four-under par total of 140. His victory earned Simons a berth in next summer's Porter Cup, a prestigious amateur tournament held each year at Niagara Falls Country Club. This is the first time Simons has been named A-10 Golfer of the Week. St. Bonaventure's next action will be on Oct. 6-7 in the Binghamton Invitational at The Links at Hiawatha Landing. Intercollegiate club hockey is coming to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford this fall thanks to some fans of the wintry sport. The club team will play four games at its home rink in Callahan Park at 10 a.m. Oct. 13 against the University of Buffalo; at 10 a.m. Oct. 27 against Gannon University; at 10 am. Nov. 10 against Medaille University; and at 10 a.m. Nov. 17 against D’Youville College. Admission is free, and, following the $1.8 million renovation of the rink at Callahan Park, there is spectator viewing. Practice began last week, supervised by Greg Miller, coordinator of residential network services at Pitt-Bradford, and the team opened away Sept. 29 at D’Youville College. The high school football player who lost consciousness after being hit during a game Friday night, passed away today in Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo. 16-year-old Damon Janes of Brocton, New York, was hurt in a Friday’s game against Portville. He was first taken to Olean General Hospital, but was then transported to Women and Children’s, where he was in intensive care until he passed away. Robert Hannon has been named Bradford High’s head varsity girls’ basketball coach for the 2013-14 school year. The Bradford Area School Board held a special meeting at noon today to vote on the measure. The appointment is effective today.
