Mackenzie Smith of Bradford will compete tomorrow in the 73rd annual All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. Mackenzie will race against Thomas Ferguson of Missouri and Emily Bigley of the state of Indiana. Mackenzie won the stock division at the Bradford Mastercraft All-American Soap Box Derby in June. Winners advance out of each competition until the champion is crowned tomorrow afternoon. Updates will be available on the derby’s website at www.aasbd.org .

There was some clowning around ... and some serious racing ... at the 3rd Annual Bradford Mastercraft All-American Soap Box Derby Saturday on Dorothy Lane. Hot dogs and meatball sandwiches were popular with some fans, while others preferred candy from the clown. This young lady can't believe he wants to charge $3 for Airheads. One of the young men reminded her, though, "He's kidding. He's a clown." On to the racing, and the prizes. Some people think it's not racing if there's not a wreck. The Bradford Mastercraft All-American Soap Box Derby is organizing for this year's races, starting with at informational meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Byllye Lanes. They're looking for volunteers and drivers to participate in this year's Soap Box Derby. If you're interested, please attend. That's Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Byllye Lanes in Bradford.

The 2009 Bradford Mastercraft All-American Soap Box Derby got underway Saturday in a new location -- Dorothy Lane and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Besides Mastercraft, other sponsors for the event are American Refining Group, Dallas-Morris Drilling, Zippo, the Blaisdell Foundation, City of Bradford, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and 100.1 The HERO. Besides the racers, pictured above are The HERO's Stefan Arlington who served as a PA announcer for the event and Frank Williams who spoke with Dr. David Johe during The HERO's broadcast. Dr. Johe is also the 1965 Soap Box Derby Champion for Charleston, West Virginia. Congratulations -- and thank you! -- to the local derby board of directors for another great year. They are Dr. David Johe, Christine Mangione, Joe Mangione, Jay Pecora, Mike Shine, Dennis Smith, Bridgette Wells, Dave Williams and director Steve Feldman.

Volunteers make the final preparations early this morning for today's Bradford Mastercraft All-American Soap Box Derby. The racing begins at 9 a.m. on Dorothy Lane between West Corydon Street and Campus Drive. Frank Williams will be broadcasting live on 100.1 The HERO.

Steve Feldman tells us Monday's informational meeting for this year's Bradford All-American Soap Box Derby was well-attended and went well, too. There's still room for more drivers, though.
