After capturing medalist honors at last weekend's Little 3 Championship, St. Bonaventure redshirt sophomore Darren Simons has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Golfer of the Week. Simons led the Bonnies to the title of the 60th annual Little 3 event, which was played on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Pine Acres Golf Club in Bradford. St. Bonaventure finished nine shots ahead of Canisius (593) and well in front of Niagara. Simons, a native of St. Marys, opened with a five-under par 67 in the morning round, then carded a 73 in the afternoon for a four-under par total of 140. His victory earned Simons a berth in next summer's Porter Cup, a prestigious amateur tournament held each year at Niagara Falls Country Club. This is the first time Simons has been named A-10 Golfer of the Week. St. Bonaventure's next action will be on Oct. 6-7 in the Binghamton Invitational at The Links at Hiawatha Landing. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure's Josh Stauffer was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the third time this season on Wednesday, the conference announced. The honor comes after Stauffer was awarded low medalist runner-up on a match of cards at the La Salle Invitational on Sunday. He fired a two-over-par 73 at Talamore Country Club in Ambler, Pa., and finished two strokes behind champion Brandon Shin of Hofstra in the 63-player field. For Stauffer, it was his fifth top-10 finish in eight tournaments this season, and the runner-up performance is second only to his co-medalist finish in SBU's Leo Keenan Invitational in September. The Bradford, Pa., native hasn't finished lower than 14th in any event during his freshman campaign. At La Salle, Stauffer recorded three birdies and was 1-under par on the course's three par-5 holes. He shot 37 over the front nine and cut a stroke off of that over the final nine holes. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure sophomore Molly Curry has been named the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week after scoring a game-winning goal and a game-tying goal last weekend to propel the Bonnies into this week's A-10 Championship. With just two minutes left in the second overtime period against Massachusetts on Friday (Oct. 26), Curry put the game-winner in the back of the net for a 1-0 victory. On Sunday (Oct. 28) against Rhode Island, with the Bonnies playing with just 10 players for the entire second half, the Ransomville, N.Y., native tied the game in the 61st minute. Shannon Van Riper scored 16 minutes later, clinching a berth in the A-10 Championship for Bonaventure. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Just like they've done throughout their careers as student-athletes, Justine Raterman and Manuela Marin Salcedo have another chance to represent the Atlantic 10 Conference among the NCAA's elite. The A-10 announced Thursday that Raterman, a Dayton women's basketball standout, and Salcedo, a St. Bonaventure women's tennis student-athlete, will be the Atlantic 10 Conference nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. The pair will join nominees from member institutions from all three NCAA divisions. The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Former St. Bonaventure women's soccer defensive standout Katie Krisko has signed a professional contract to join Gustafs GoIF in Sweden's Second Division. Krisko, who graduated in May, was a four-year starter for the Bonnies, anchoring the defensive backline for the Brown and White each season. She will join her new team in Sweden on Friday. "I'm really excited about the opportunity to continue my soccer career in Sweden," Krisko said. "I'm anxious to get back on the field and make an impact. I can't thank my family, coaches and friends enough for all their support and encouragement in helping me do what I love." NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Atlantic 10 Conference Council of Presidents has formally accepted Virginia Commonwealth University for membership, the league announced Tuesday. VCU, which combines outstanding academics with successful athletic programs, will join the A-10 on July 1, 2012 and begin competition during the 2012-13 academic year. The immediate addition will bring the total number of Atlantic 10 members to 15 for the 2012-13 season. VCU fields 16 of the A-10’s 21 championship sports. “The addition of Virginia Commonwealth University to the Atlantic 10 further strengthens us as the nation’s premier basketball-driven conference,” said Father Michael J. St. Bonaventure redshirt junior Eddie Gray was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday following a weekend in which he tossed seven shutout innings as part of a 12-0 win over Fordham last Friday afternoon. Gray limited the visiting Rams to just two hits – the fewest allowed by the Pulaski, N.Y., native in his career when pitching at least seven innings. Gray struck out seven Fordham batters, including a stretch of five straight spanning the 1st and 2nd innings to set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. The southpaw faced three batters over the minimum and needed just 92 pitches to get through his seven innings as he earned his team-leading third win of the season (3-1) and lowered his team-best ERA to 2.95. Gray, Bonaventure's No. 1 starter, is allowing opposing batters to hit just .274 against him and has tossed a team-leading 42.2 innings so far this season in six starts. St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt was chosen by staff writers and editors at Sporting News as the Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year, the publication announced on its website Tuesday. Schmidt guided the Bonnies to a 17-11 overall record, going 10-6 in conference play in 2011-12. The 17 wins tied a career best for Schmidt -- who went 17-11 with Robert Morris during the 2006-07 season prior to his arrival – and rank as the most for the Brown and White since the 2001-02 season (17-13). Winners of eight straight home games, the Bonnies host league-leader Temple in a nationally televised "White Out" game Wednesday at the Reilly Center. The Reilly Center will host a "White Out" night and athletics department officials encourage everyone in attendance to wear white in support of the Bonnies. Senior Jessica Jenkins hit eight 3-pointers en route to a game-high 32 points as RV/RV St. Bonaventure (22-2, 9-0 Atlantic 10) defeated a shorthanded George Washington club, 80-69, to win its record-tying 11th straight game and remain alone at the top of the A-10 standings. Bonaventure and Jenkins took advantage of a GW squad (10-12, 3-5 A-10) which dressed just six players due to injuries. Atlantic 10 Conference officials have named St. Bonaventure junior Demitrius Conger as the league's Co-Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games played during the week of Dec. 12-18. Conger shot 6-of-8 from the field (75 percent) to score 20 points and lead St. Bonaventure to a win over Loyola (Md.), snapping the Greyhounds' eight-game winning streak. A Brooklyn, N.Y., product, Conger sunk a 3-pointer, and seven free throws while dishing out five assists and pulling down four rebounds in the Bonnies' only game of the week. The award is Conger's first of his career. The forward is St. Bonaventure's second-leading scorer at 11.9 per game, and the club's third-leading rebounder at five per outing. Three Atlantic 10 teams, including St. Bonaventure, will play in the College Basketball Invitational Tournament. On Wednesday, St. Bonaventure plays Central Florida in Florida. Duquesne plays at Montana and Miami (Ohio) plays at Rhode Island. Also Wednesday, Weber State plays at Oregon. The tournament starts on Tuesday with James Madison at Davidson, San Jose State at Creighton, Austin Peay at Boise State and Hofstra at Evansville. This is the fourth year of the CBI. Previous winners were Tulsa , Oregon State and VCU.
