The Community Nurses are offering flu shot clinics at all area senior centers in Cameron, Elk and McKean counties. Anyone 18 and older is eligible to get their flu shot at these clinics. The general public is welcome to attend. Seniors should bring their Medicare cards and all insurance cards. Others can pay a fee for their shots. No appointment is needed. The Community Nurses say anyone can get the flu, and it can be serious. A variety of factors have contributed to a sudden, critical blood shortage. Much heavier than expected blood usage, fewer donors due to the holiday, more donors with the flu, and now the weather have all conspired to create the first blood shortage for the Community Blood Bank in over a year and it's a big one. The Community Blood Bank is holding a blood drive this Monday January 28, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church located at 95 East Corydon from noon to 5:30 p.m. No appointment is needed to save a life. "It's everything all at once," said Dan Desrochers, Director of Marketing at the Community Blood Bank. "We just aren't able to get enough donors to meet the local need." The flu has taken its toll on all segments of the population this season and, over the weekend, a local teenager died of complications from the flu. 17-year-old Christopher Riley of Ridgway died Saturday at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was a senior at Ridgway Area High School and had just started working at Aiello’s Café, according to his obituary. His family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Meehan-Shilk Funeral Home in Ridgway. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Amy Peterson, LPN and Infection Control professional at Kane Community Hospital has announced visitation restrictions: “Flu season is in full swing with cases on the rise and expected to climb higher. In response, KCH has enacted visitor restrictions. The hospital asks that people who are sick and those under the age of 18 not visit patients in the hospital.” Influenza or the “flu” is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by the influenza virus When people who are suffering from the flu, cough, sneeze or talk, droplets of moisture from these actions can be inhaled and can infect people up to six feet away. The flu can come on abruptly. The symptoms of the flu include a high fever of up to 104 degrees and extreme fatigue. Other symptoms include, sore throat, nasal congestion, headache, muscle aches and a cough. Anyone exhibiting these symptoms should stay at home and stay hydrated with water and juices. The flu has made its grand entry this year, sending many normally healthy individuals into misery. So much misery that many are heading to local emergency rooms, doctor offices, or clinics for treatment. But according to the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) and the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (PaACEP), a trip to the ER or clinic may not always be necessary. “For many flu victims, staying at home, drinking fluids, and taking acetaminophen is all that they need,” says Ralph J. Riviello, MD, MD, FACEP, president of PaACEP. “But there will be exceptions, and those people should seek immediate assistance.” For example, Dr. Riviello says certain symptoms will trigger a reason to seek immediate care from a physician. Smethport Senior Center , temporarily located at the East Smethport United Methodist Church, from 10 a.m. to noon All of the clinics are open to the general public, ages 18 and older.
