By Kiara Catanzaro SBU ’15 St. Bonaventure University will host its 28th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29. Local high school girls and their coaches will participate in sporting event programs throughout the day with St. Bonaventure’s female student-athletes and staff. The event, sponsored by the School of Education, the Department of Physical Education, the Department of Athletics, the Department of Military Science and the Visiting Scholars Program, will host 15 school districts including 400 women student-athletes along with their coaches and teachers. Students from the following school districts will attend: Allegany-Limestone, Archbishop Walsh, Austin Area Schools, Bath, Bolivar-Richburg, Bradford, Cuba-Rushford, Fillmore, Franklinville, Jamestown-Lutheran, Portville, Randolph, Seneca Nation, South Park and Southwestern. An Allegany native and graduate of St. Bonaventure University was one of 16 people injured in a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas on Wednesday that left four people dead, including the gunman. US Army Major Patrick Miller, a two-time combat veteran had surgery Wednesday night. During a news conference late this morning, doctors at the hospital where the injured people are being treated said three are in critical condition; five are in fair condition; the rest are in good condition and some may be released today. They didn't give the names of the people when talking about their conditions. Miller was in the ROTC at St. Bonaventure and graduated in 2003. The Allegany-Limestone Middle School principal has been found guilty of harassment, but is appealing the verdict. Tim McMullen has been ordered to pay a fine for stalking a woman. He released a statement saying the judge made numerous mistakes in the non-criminal trial and says he has already started the appeal process regarding what he called an erroneous and ludicrous decision. Three muralists whose work draws thousands of visitors from across the world to the Northern Ireland city of Derry each year will bring their skills and experiences to Western New York this month with a weeklong stay as artists in residence at St. Bonaventure University. With buildings in the Bogside area of Derry as their giant canvases, Tom Kelly, his brother William and their friend Kevin Hasson spent 12 years commemorating more than 30 years of civil strife and conflict in the six counties of Northern Ireland. The trio has become known as The Bogside Artists. The 12 murals of what has been dubbed The People’s Gallery stretch in a line the length of Rossville Street in the Bogside area of Derry, which experienced the worst of the troubles throughout the long conflict. Coinciding with their visit to campus will be an exhibit of their murals, the senior project of St. Bonaventure art major Karen Vester. On Saturday, Feb. 11, St. Bonaventure University hosted the regional phase of the 2012 MATHCOUNTS competition, a national contest for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Contestants worked both individually and in four-person school teams on questions designed by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the main sponsoring organization. The two schools competing at St. Bonaventure, with their coaches, were Allegany-Limestone Middle School (Kathy Stamets) and Cheektowaga Central School (David Guzzino). Other organizations providing financial support for the contest at the national level include CNA Foundation, ConcoPhillips, U.S. Department of Defense, Northrup Grumman Foundation, Raytheon Company, Texas Instruments, 3M Foundation, ThinkFun, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Zach is most proud of the fact that he was an honor student throughout his high school career. He plans to attend the Pennsylvania University of Technology, (Penn Tech), for heavy equipment operation. Playing in the Raabe Classic has been a goal since seeing his first game as a small boy. His greatest thrill was returning an intercepted pass 40 yards for a touchdown against Erie Cathedral Prep. Zach also got a second place in the high jump to help the Owls to their 13th consecutive win in a District Track Meet. MATHCOUNTS, a national math contest for sixth-, seventh- and eighth graders, will be hosted by St. Bonaventure University on Feb. 11 in the William F. Walsh Science Center Amphitheater from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Chairman of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Doug Cashing, will coordinate this year’s competition. Local middle schools will send four students and one coach to participate in the contest. Last year, Allegany-Limestone Central School, Cheektowaga Central School, and Tapestry Charter School from Buffalo were among the participants. During a series of morning and afternoon rounds, students participate individually and as a team trying to advance their school further in the competition. The three individuals and schools that receive the top scores will win trophies. The three highest scoring schools will advance to the state competition, which will take place in March. Winners of the state competition will advance to nationals, which will be held in Orlando, Fla., on May 11. ...

More than 300 works by young artists are on display through May as part of the annual Middle School Art Exhibition at the Regina A. Quick Center of the Arts at St. Bonaventure University. The exhibition opens officially at 7 p.m. Thursday when the artists, representing 14 schools in New York and Pennsylvania, will be present to answer questions about their work. A reception will follow. “The level of excellence was so high that it made our jobs very difficult,” said Karen Vester, a St. Bonaventure art major and one of four jurors for the exhibition. Another juror, Courtney Blackmon of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, agreed, adding, “I’m in awe of some of the art these students created.” Students from the following schools have works in the exhibition: Allegany-Limestone, Olean Middle School, Portville, Wellsville, Randolph, Oswayo Valley, Port Allegany, Ellicottville, West Valley, Cassadega Valley, Otto-Eldred, Bolivar-Richburg, Salamanca and Fillmore.

An Allegany woman is facing charges for allegedly trying to give fireworks to a minor. Sheriff's deputies say 38-year-old Deanna Tarbox took the illegal fireworks to Allegany-Limestone Middle School with the intent of giving them to a student. Deputies say office staff and administration took quick action, along with school resource officer Deupty Daniel Gonska, to ensure that none of the fireworks reached any minors. Tarbox is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and unlawfully dealing with dangerous fireworks. She's scheduled to appear in Town of Allegany Court on Monday.

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will honor three high school students as “Women of Promise” for their achievements in athletics, community service, and the creative and performing arts at a luncheon on Monday, March 1. Breea C. Willingham, a Pitt-Bradford alumna and visiting professor of journalism at St. Bonaventure University, will give the keynote address titled “I’m not Supposed to be Here.” Being honored are Faith Benson of Allegany-Limestone (N.Y.) Central School for community service; Alyssa Bowser of Port Allegany High School for creative and performing arts; and Kimberly Telaak of Ellicottville (N.Y.) Central School for athletics. Pennsylvania Jake Damon, St. Marys Area High School 5’11” 235lbs. Offensive Guard / Defensive End / Tackle Jake plans on attending a four year college majoring in Forensic Science. He would also like to continue his football career. Jakes honors include being a member of the National Honor Society. Jake was asked why he wants to play in the Big 30 game and he said. “I would like to play in this game because this game is one of the highest honors in this area. Playing in this game means that people noticed you during the regular season and that you have worked hard and gave it your all.” Jakes biggest thrill in football was being able to play with his friends.
