Pitt-Bradford Students Donate
Time, Money to Community

By Kimberly Marcott Weinberg Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing Over the past year, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford students have contributed 7,771 community service hours and $10,337 in donations to various causes locally and globally. The hours and donations were compiled by Tonya Ackley, coordinator of community engagement, a position created a year ago at Pitt-Bradford to match Pitt-Bradford students with opportunities for service in the Bradford community and beyond. Alpha Phi Omega, a co-educational service fraternity, provided the most hours of service with 1,444. APO worked with Red Cross and Community Blood Bank Blood Drives, Adopt-a-Highway, Empty Bowls project to benefit the Friendship Table, Bradford Ecumenical Home, Beacon Light Behavioral Health Systems, Bowl for Kids’ Sake, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Friendship Table, George G. Empty Bowls & Baskets Dinner March 15

Pitt-Bradford will hold the seventh annual Empty Bowls and Baskets Dinner of homemade soup and bread to heighten awareness of the fight against hunger and to raise money for the Friendship Table. The dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in the Mukaiyama University Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door. Diners are invited to take home a hand-painted ceramic bowl, handcrafted basket or hand-sewn cloth napkins as a reminder that someone else’s bowl might be empty. To date, close to $8,855 has been raised to benefit the Friendship Table. Dr. Holly J. Collaborative Resource Fair at the Mall

The event goes on until 6 p.m. today. Other organizations at the fair include the YWCA, Career Link, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, The Friendship Table, McKean County Family Centers, Bradford Regional Medical Center and Futures. Catholic Charities Adoption Services, Life and Independence for Today and the BOCES Practical Nursing Program also have free information for people who attend the fair.

Empty Bowls & Baskets Dinner Thursday

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will hold the sixth annual Empty Bowls and Baskets Dinner of homemade soup and bread to raise awareness of the fight against hunger and to raise money for the Friendship Table. The dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in the Mukaiyama University Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door. Diners are invited to take home a hand-painted ceramic bowl, handcrafted basket or hand-sewn cloth napkins as a reminder that someone else’s bowl might be empty. To date, close to $7,000 has been raised to benefit the Friendship Table. Dr. Holly J. United Way to Gather Food

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, along with two of its student groups, is working with the United Way of the Bradford Area to gather food next month for area food banks. The food drive, which is being organized by Pitt-Bradford’s Students in Free Enterprise, will gather non-perishable items from Nov. 1 through 19. Items will be split between the Bradford YWCA food pantry, the Bradford Salvation Army food pantry and The Friendship Table, which provides evening meals for those who are hungry. On campus, the Student Nurse Organization will be collecting at several sites: Frame-Westerberg Commons, Hanley Library, Fisher Hall, Swarts Hall, Blaisdell Hall and the Sport and Fitness Center. Off-campus drop points for individuals or organizations to make donations are Bradford branches of Northwest Savings Bank and the lobby of Pitt-Bradford’s Seneca Building on Marilyn Horne Way downtown. The dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 18, in the Mukaiyama University Room in the Frame-Westerberg Commons. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door. Diners are invited to take home a handcrafted ceramic bowl, basket or hand-sewn cloth napkins as a reminder that someone else’s bowl might be empty. According to Dr. Holly J. Dance-a-Thon at Pitt-Bradford

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford African-American Student Union will hold an all-night dance-a-thon this weekend to benefit hunger relief programs in Bradford. The event begins at 9 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 30) night in the Tom L. McDowell Fieldhouse in the Sport and Fitness Center and ends at 9 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 31). Supervision will be provided by Pitt-Bradford faculty and staff. The public is welcome. Cost to participate is $3. Entry fee for non-participants is $1. Water, snacks and energy bars will be served. Proceeds from the event will go to the Let’s Can Hunger Campaign, which will provide food for The Friendship Table, Bradford YWCA and Salvation Army. Sponsored by the Women’s History Month Celebration committee, the dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 19, in the Mukaiyama University Room. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door. Diners are invited to select a handcrafted ceramic bowl or a basket as a reminder that someone else’s bowl might be empty. According to Dr. Holly J.
