By ANNE HOLLLIDAY WESB/WBRR News Director Get ready for another traffic change in downtown Bradford. An ordinance to make Kennedy Street one-way from Boylston Street to Main Street was approved on first reading by city council Tuesday night. Traffic would flow toward Main Street. Mayor Tom Riel explained that a parking space would be removed from Main Street so people turning onto Main from Kennedy would have a better view. Also, council approved on first reading an ordinance that would allow parking on both side of Kennedy Street from Boylston to Main. The measures are in response to concerns from Kennedy Street business owners. If approved on second reading, both ordinances would go into effect on October 4. Councilman Rick Benton voted against the proposed ordinances because of the “terrible sight problem.” “I hope one parking space will take care of it,” he said. By ANNE HOLLIDAY WESB/WBRR News Director A Bradford businesswoman is “aggressively” expanding her business, and creating jobs in the process. Carolyn Boser Newhouse of Super User Technologies will start providing video surveillance and access control services, and asked for a $100,000 Enterprise Zone loan to help with the startup costs. Bradford City Council approved the loan during its meeting Tuesday. The loan has an interest rate of 3 percent for a term of up to 15 years. She told council that many people think her company is an information technology business but it’s actually wired and wireless communications infrastructure. “We put the wire in the wall and the waves in the air,” she said. She said she wants to add a complementary scope of service – a new division for surveillance and access control “which is supposed to be somewhat recession proof.” Newhouse said she expects to create seven new jobs to start with. By ANNE HOLLIDAY WESB/WBRR News Director Frustration has been growing among Atlantic Broadband customers about television reception, and one person took his concerns to Bradford City Council Tuesday. Bradford resident Brad Mangel said, with the franchise contract coming up for renewal in a couple of years, maybe the city could do something. “The lower channels are terrible and they’re not doing anything about it,” Mangel said. "This new digital TV …was supposed to be a Godsend. Well, to me, it’s made my television reception worse,” he added. Police Chief Chris Lucco asked if Mangel had tried contacting the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. Mangel said cable companies are not governed by the PUC. “I wish I could go to the PUC,” he said, “but it wouldn’t do any good.” "I’ll keep complaining to Atlantic Broadband and they’ll keep telling me it’s a satellite signal and clouds get in front of them, and I know better. Sam Sylvester of the Historical Architectural Review Board said he was asked to attend Tuesday’s council meeting to talk about "the appropriateness of the recent pink job at the Riddell House.” “Joe (Troutman) is a friend of mine and I appreciate (that) he’s doing what he’s doing. But if the HARB is to be effective, we need to see the request first. We have not seen the request," Sylvester said. He said there are several other incidents in town where people have done work without contacting HARB, but he was just at the meeting to talk about the Riddell House. City Clerk John Peterson said the city received several complaints, so he contacted commercial building inspector Mark Grassi. The main event, though, is always the leek cuisine. Always a popular stop -- the East Bradford fire station for the leek dip contest. Sausage and leek sandwiches were one of the hot items for lunch.
