Marienville, Pa. – Marienville Ranger District Robert T. Fallon signed a decision on January 28, 2011, to implement Alternative 3 of the De Young Project covering 16,672 acres in Highland Township, Elk County and Howe and Jenks Townships in Forest County. Activities planned for this area include: Regeneration of a new forest on 542 acres to create early-structural habitat; Intermediate thinning on 769 acres; Reforestation treatments on 552 acres; Wildlife habitat enhancement activities on 76 acres; Non-native invasive plant species treatments on 50 acres; Large wood introductions into streams along 38 miles of streams; and Restoring forest cover on six plugged well sites and their access roads. Marienville, Pa. – The Marienville Ranger District of the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) is proposing to collect information on how glossy buckthorn responds to mechanical treatment, i.e. cutting, in relation to the forest environment and timing of the treatment. A total of five acres of treatment will occur. After the initial cutting, the treatments may be repeated during the third and fifth years depending on their effectiveness. The project area is located within Warrants 1570, 1571, 1574, and 1575 of Spring Creek Township in Elk County and Warrant 4865 of Ridgway Township in Elk County, Pennsylvania. This proposal intends to cut glossy buckthorn once during the growing season and again in the dormant season on approximately 1.0 acre in each of the following settings: fully-stocked hardwood stand, commercial thinning, final harvest, savannah, and a wetland. Marienville, Pa. – On March 23, 2010, Marienville District Ranger Robert T. Fallon made the decision to continue using prescribed fire to maintain the herbaceous openings in the Buzzard Swamp area located in Jenks Township in Forest County and Millstone Township in Elk County, Pennsylvania. The project will burn up to 200 acres annually for the next 5 to 10 years. Prescribed burning would occur outside of the nesting season (April 15 to September 15) unless sites have been surveyed to determine that species with viability concerns are not currently nesting in these areas. This decision is not subject to administrative review or appeal pursuant to 36 CFR 215. Implementation may occur immediately. The Allegheny National Forest has announced the opening of additional ATV trails for the winter use season. Beginning Friday, February 5th, the Marienville Ranger District will open both the Timberline trail and the southern section of the Marienville ATV trail. The northern portion of the Marienville ATV trail will remain closed due to trail conditions. Due to the northern portion of the Marienville ATV trail remaining closed, however, the southern trail will be two-way traffic. Riders are urged to use caution due to this changed traffic pattern. According to Marienville District Ranger Rob Fallon, “we appreciate your understanding and patience and we remain committed to providing a safe and enjoyable ATV trail system for our visitors.”
