Thomas Haggie has been sentenced to two life terms in prison without the possibility of parole for killing Megan Konopka and her unborn son in September of 2009. The 31-year-old pleaded guilty last month in exchange for having the death penalty taken off the table. His co-defendant, Greggory Theobald, received the same sentence in July and is serving his time at the state correctional institution at Fayette.

Thomas Haggie has pleaded guilty to killing Megan Konopka and her unborn baby in September of 2009 at the Riddell House, and is expected to be sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole. Sentencing is scheduled for January 13 in McKean County Court. District Attorney Ray Learn had said he was going to seek the death penalty for Haggie and his co-defendant Greggory Theobald. When the men agreed to plead guilty, Learn took the death penalty off the table. Theobald pleaded guilty in July and is serving his time at the State Correctional Institution at Fayette.

Megan Konopka’s daughter has been adopted by a couple from Kane, although the little girl’s grandparents had wanted custody of her. Konopka and her unborn son were murdered last September at the Riddell House. Her daughter Michell, who will turn 2 this month, has been a foster child of Scott and Laura Lorenzo since she was 3 months old. McKean County Children and Youth Services placed Michell with the Lorenzos after discovering that Konopka was mentally challenged and unable to care for her daughter. Her parents didn’t know about Michell until after Konopka’s death. Greggory Theobald is serving two consecutive life sentences without the chance of parole for killing Konopka and the unborn baby. Thomas Haggie has pleaded not guilty to his part in the crime and is undergoing a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation while awaiting trial.

A trust fund has been set up for the one-year-old daughter of murder victim Megan Konopka. The money will be given to Michelle Hardy when she reaches legal age. Donations can be made to the Michelle Hardy Donation Account at any Northwest Savings branch. Konopka was murdered September 13 in a room at the Riddell House in Bradford. 29-year-old Thomas Haggie and 20-year-old Greggory Theobald have been charged with killing Konopka and her unborn son, who was due early next month.

Murder suspect Thomas Haggie was arraigned this afternoon at District Judge Rich Luther's office. Haggie was arrested in Elmira, New York, Monday night in connection with the Sunday night murder of 21-year-old Megan Konopka in a room at the Riddell House. Konopka was 8 ½ months pregnant. Still wearing an orange jumpsuit from the Chemung County Jail, Haggie was arraigned on charges of criminal homicide, criminal homicide of an unborn child, conspiracy to commit homicide and conspiracy to commit homicide of an unborn child. Haggie was taken to McKean County Jail in Smethport, where the other suspect, Greggory Theobald, has been since Monday morning.

At about 7:30 Monday night the Elmira Police Department received information that a person wanted in relation to a homicide investigtion in Bradford was at the Elmira Bus Terminal. Police responded to the bus terminal, but the suspect was not immediately located. Witnesses at the station were interviewed, and reported that a subject matching the description had just left the area on foot. Police found Thomas Haggie at Langdon Plaza.
