(News Release)The Bradford Area Public Library, in conjunction with the Energy Institute at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, will offer a panel discussion on the subject of Windmills on Thursday evening at the library. Speakers representing a variety of perspectives will be featured at the event, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Matthew Kropf, Director of the American-Refining Group/Harry R. Halloran, Jr. Energy Institute and Assistant Professor of Petroleum Technology, will present an overview of the subject of wind power, including the costs and benefits of large-scale wind farms. “Wind power is a growing component of our energy portfolio,” according to Kropf. “The purpose of a forum such as this is to enlighten the public about the many options that are coming into play, both with technology that is up and running and new ideas for the near future.” Other speakers will include Lisa DiFrancisco, of REVision Consulting LLC, who will discuss the development of small ...

Dr. Mark Kelley, assistant professor of sports medicine, and alumnus Joe Colosimo ’94 will be honored by the Pitt-Bradford Alumni Association during Alumni and Family Weekend at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Kelley, director of the sports medicine program, will accept the PBAA Teaching Excellence Award. Kelley has taught at Pitt-Bradford for nine years, directing the sports medicine program and serving as director of freshman seminar for several years. Before coming to Pitt-Bradford, he was a graduate teaching assistant in the anatomy lab at Slippery Rock University. He has worked with the Bradford Family YMCA developing a diabetes program through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Kelley holds a doctoral degree from Capella University in leadership for higher education, a master’s degree in exercise and wellness promotion from Slippery Rock University and a Bachelor of Science in sports medicine from Pit...

University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Students, led by Dr. Steve Robar associate professor of political science, will be canvassing the Allegheny National Forest starting in mid-May to conduct a full environmental analysis for the Pennsylvania Kinzua Pathways (PKP) proposed project “The Trails at Jakes Rocks.” Representatives from PKP, Pitt-Bradford and the ANF attended a dynamic presentation by the students, describing exactly how these eight to 10 students will accomplish the analysis for the 47 miles of proposed mountain biking trails. Starting in May, students will break into two teams and will begin the work of studying, documenting, capturing on film and indexing all flora and fauna found within 100 foot corridors of the proposed trail network. “These students will be able to provide more detailed information than would have been provided if we had to use our own ANF resources. Yesterday’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford welcomed a special guest. Jonathan Deal from South Africa is one of this year’s winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize, which is sometimes called the Nobel Prize for the environmental movement. With no prior experience in grassroots organizing, Deal led a successful campaign against fracking in South Africa to protect the Karoo, a semi-desert region treasured for its agriculture, beauty and wildlife. Deal also met with President Obama last week. Today, to celebrate Earth Day, students from Bradford Area High School are watching and discussing many of the films shown during yesterday’s film festival. A new major at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will allow students returning to college and transfer students to make the most of their credits toward a bachelor’s degree. The university is offering a degree in general studies beginning this term. The major offers students the ability to use more credits from a wide variety of subject areas toward one degree. Although it is not as narrowly focused as a single-discipline major, the general studies major will require 72 to 73 credits of the 120 credits required for graduation to be distributed over three areas of studies. Students will have to design their academic plan to include courses from three of five areas, which are arts and letters; behavioral, economic and political science; history, cultures and philosophical inquiry; physical, life and computational sciences; and professional studies.
