Three women have been cited after an incident late Tuesday night at the Gold Eagle Hotel in Eldred. State Police cited 33-year-old Angela Cummings of Eldred and 39-year-old Sandra Kimble of Smethport for one count of disorderly conduct. 36-year-old Roxanne Gotshall of Eldred has been cited for two counts of disorderly conduct. Gotshall and Kimble are also listed as victims on the police report. The citations will be filed in District Judge Bill Todd's office. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Gregory Privitera, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology at St. Bonaventure University, will discuss global obesity through the eyes of psychology during an upcoming lecture on campus. The program, “Global Obesity from the Perspective of Psychology,” will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the auditorium of the William F. Walsh Science Center. This is a free lecture and the public is welcome. Privitera will explore issues and potential solutions to global obesity. Population statistics will be shared for obesity rates and nutrition across the globe and these statistics will be compared to past trends in order to introduce how psychology can explain many of problems found today. Privitera will discuss how our body works, why it craves nutrients that can lead to poor health outcomes, and how psychology can contribute practical solutions for reducing global obesity. Congratulations to the Bradford High Lady Owls, who captured the District 9 title tonight with a 59-53 win over Elk Catholic. The Lady Owls are now 21-0 with one game left to play. They are 9-0 in D-9 play. Kaserra Owens led the Lady Owls with 21 points. Ali Rinfrette added 19 and Haley Vinelli chipped in 11. The last time the Lady Owls won a District 9 championship was in 1996. Before tonight's game current coach Ann Nuzzo honored former coach Margie Holland, who started the girls' basketball program in the 1970s and led the team to several undefeated seasons and championships. OECD Executive Director Sara Andrews said that’s the attitude she and Main Street Manager Colette Roessler are going to try to encourage business owners to have. Andrews and Roessler talked about the downtown business district prior to Tuesday’s Bradford City Council meeting when they discussed applying for a Keystone Communities Main Street Façade Grant. If they get the $50,000 grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development, they would continue the façade improvement program, which has already led to $600,000 worth of improvements downtown. More than half of that came from private investments by property owners. During the council meeting, members authorized the filing of the grant application. Sunday’s fire in a dorm at St. Bonaventure University has been ruled arson, and investigators are trying to determine who started the fire. Sheriff’s deputies say two microwaves in Devereux Hall were stuffed with paper products and one of them caught fire at around 6 a.m. Between 250 and 300 students were evacuated and sent to the lobby of Shay-Loughlin Hall for about an hour and a half. Investigators have interviewed about 80 students so far. No one was hurt, and damage was limited to the area of the microwave that caught fire. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Nova Scotia’s spectacular musical, “DRUM!,” is coming to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford this month. The show will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, in the Bromeley Family Theater. Tickets are $10 to $12 for all students and $20 to $24 for adults. “DRUM!” is a musical production with 20 musicians, dancers, drummers and singers from four of the principal North American cultures — Native American, Acadian, Black and Celtic — brought together in a single heart-pumping performance directed by Timothy French along with musical director Doris Mason. “DRUM!” was developed in 1999, when it was conceived as a 45-minute main-stage show at Tall Ships 2000 in Nova Scotia. The performance was so popular that it went on tour to a series of international conferences and was broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Company. A Hornell man is in jail on charges that he helped another man accused of shooting at state troopers during a traffic stop September 27 in Hornellsville. 50-year-old Thomas McCormick was arrested Monday and sent to Steuben County Jail on $5,000 bail. During the incident, 38-year-old Richard VanGorden of Addison fired several rifle rounds at two state troopers. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder following a police chase and three-hour standoff in Wellsville. Police did not say what McCormick’s role was other than providing VanGorden with criminal assistance during the investigation. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

The St. Bonaventure Women's basketball team is ranked #25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll that came out this afternoon. This is the first time in program history the Bonnies have been ranked in this poll. Yesterday, they moved up to #22 in The AP's weekly poll. Harrisburg - Governor Tom Corbett has signed House Bill 1950, the Marcellus Shale bill, into law. The bill enhances protection of our natural resources through stronger environmental standards, authorizes counties to adopt an impact fee, and builds upon efforts to help move Pennsylvania toward energy independence. The historic measure is the first comprehensive re-write of the state’s Oil and Gas Act since 1984. It contains much of what Corbett outlined in his Marcellus Shale proposal last October. His plan followed the work of the Governor’s Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission. Winners of eight straight home games, the Bonnies host league-leader Temple in a nationally televised "White Out" game Wednesday at the Reilly Center. The Reilly Center will host a "White Out" night and athletics department officials encourage everyone in attendance to wear white in support of the Bonnies. The Student Government Association is also sponsoring a canned-food drive. Temple enters the game on an eight-game win streak and sits just outside the Top 25 in the most recent AP poll. St. Bonaventure is 9-1 in the Reilly Center this season, with all but one victory coming by double digits. ALBANY -- Abuse and misuse of prescription narcotics continues to rise, and the State Senate took action today by passing several bills to control it. Senator Cathy Young co-sponsored the group of bills which will implement greater controls on Hydrocodone and Tramadol, which are highly-addictive prescription pain medications, and will make it a crime in the first-degree to illegally sell a controlled substance to a minor under the age of 14. “The number of prescriptions for these painkillers, deaths from overdoses, and pharmacy robberies by addicts has increased significantly in recent years. Among the most abused drugs, prescription pain medications are second only to marijuana, and part of the new legislation toughens the existing penalties for those possessing a large quantity of these medications,” Senator Young said. “Further, we need to protect our youths who start experimenting with these dangerous drugs, even in their teens. A district judge in Lancaster, PA, is accused of dismissing her own traffic citations. Attorney General Linda Kelley says 43-year-old Kelly is charged with conflict of interest, tampering with public records and obstructing the administration of law or other governmental function. The AG’s office says Lancaster police cited Ballentine's car three times in November 2010 for parking violations and expired registration, and summonses were later issued. They allege that Ballentine accessed the judicial system and dismissed the summonses. Officials say there is no record of fines having been paid. Ballentine was arraigned Monday and released on $25,000 unsecured bail. The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will present a “Bits of Bygone Bradford” lecture series in February and March. The series of historical lectures was developed by the Bradford Landmark Society for the Pitt-Bradford Division of Continuing Education and Regional Development. Sessions are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays Feb. 16 through March 22. The cost for the lectures is $15 per class or $75 for all six. Classes take place in Room 200 of the Seneca Building at 2 Main St. in Bradford. The first week’s topic is “Bootleggers, Bullets and Blood” about the 1920s moonshine feud between Olean, N.Y., and Bradford. On Feb. 23, the subject is “Build a Better Bradford with Bricks.” At one time, Bradford had five brick plants manufacturing bricks that were used all over the east coast. Best-selling author Jeffrey Zaslow died in automobile accident Friday in Michigan. The 51-year-old columnist for The Wall Street Journal co-wrote “The Last Lecture” with Randy Pausch as well as books with Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger and former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly. Following a pair of road victories last week, the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team (24-2, 11-0 Atlantic 10 Conference) moved up to No. 22 in the Associated Press Poll Monday afternoon. The Bonnies remain the only A-10 team – men's or women's – ranked in the poll as they've won a program-record 13 straight games. Their most recent victory – a 56-55 triumph in the closing seconds at Dayton – extended their road record to a nation-best 12-0. Not only is the record the best in the country, but the dozen road wins leads all Division I teams. The only school in the nation with more wins than St. Bonaventure is No. 1 Baylor (25-0). No. 4 Notre Dame – which lost at home to now-No. 25 West Virginia, a team the Bonnies beat on the road – is also 24-2 on the year.
