The popular annual lecture by Dr. Marvin Thomas, professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, will this year focus on a watershed event in the history of the Victorian age, the British Empire and modern warfare. Thomas’s multi-media talk, “Gordon’s Revenge: Omdurman,” will take place at 8 p.m. April 10 in Rice Auditorium in Fisher Hall. As part of the university’s Spectrum series, it is free and open to the public. Omdurman still has echoes today, Thomas explained. “When democratic governments follow an inconsistent foreign policy with the change of every administration, tragic consequences invariably result for all those involved. Military forces being applied by one administration may find themselves compromised by the change of policy of the next administration. Mario A. Magnella, 56, of 145 Looker Mountain Trail, formerly of Williams Street, passed away, Monday, April 2nd, 2012 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Born April 5, 1955, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Anthony Magnella and Giselle (Meissner) Magnella who survives. He was a 1973 graduate of Bradford Central Christian High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Duquesne University, graduating with honors in 1977. Mr. Magnella was the owner and operator of the Broaster for several years, then worked as a Price Control Manager for the former Jamesway. He also worked for several area paint stores. He was a lifetime member of St. Bernard Church, a member of the Italian American Progressive Club and the former Carnegie Library Book Club. He loved gardening, nature walks in the woods and classical music. His passion was refurbishing old cars and trucks. He also enjoyed assisting the elderly with yard care and snow shoveling. A woman who was being booked at the Chautauqua County Jail for felony driving while intoxicated is now facing more charges. Sheriff’s deputies say at 7 o’clock this morning they were processing 29-year-old Amanda Ritchie of Westfield when they discovered that she had marijuana and cocaine. The additional charges are criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana and promoting prison contraband. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

The fire that damaged an apartment in Emporium Monday afternoon was intentionally set. State Police Fire Marshal David Surra says accelerant material was used to start the fire inside a refrigerator in the basement apartment at 410 West. Allegany Avenue. The fire spread to the ceiling and walls, but was contained to the basement apartment. The tenant, 59-year-old Kenneth LaBrozzi, was not home at the time of the fire. All other occupants of the building were evacuated, and there were no injuries. The building is owned by Joseph DiBello. Damage is estimated at $25,000. In 1965, he became the first of his family to earn a college degree and receive his ROTC commission in the U.S. Army. Nearly 50 years later, former Buffalo resident and staunch Buffalo Bills fan Marvin W. Stocker and his wife, Donna, have surpassed a quarter of a million dollars in lifetime giving to St. Bonaventure University — all to help others experience a St. Bonaventure education. The University today announced the Stockers’ pledge of $50,000 to the School of Business Building Campaign. Three people were hurt when a car and tractor-trailer collided this morning on I-86 in the Town of North Harmony. Sheriff’s deputies say a car driven by 28-year-old Holly Sharma of St. Louis Missouri, was attempting to pass the tractor-trailer at 6:45 a.m. when the truck, driven by 41-year-old Raymond Hickey of Erie, veered into the car and forced it off the highway into an embankment. Sharma and her three passengers were taken by ambulance to WCA Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Hickey was not hurt but was cited for making an unsafe lane change. A Randolph teenager is accused of assaulting a man at the Arrowmart last week. The 17-year-old, who sheriff’s deputies did not name, allegedly threw 21-year-old Alec Kinney of Randolph to the ground and punched him multiple times. Three people were hurt in an accident late Monday afternoon on Route 20 in the Town of Portland. Sheriff’s deputies say Hobart Damico of Brocton pulled off the road to check his mailbox, and then turned back onto the road into the path of a vehicle driven by Alice Walters of Ripley. Damico and his passenger Fae Damico were taken by Starflight to ECMC. Waters was taken by ambulance to Brooks Memorial Hospital. Damico was cited for making an unsafe turn. A Pennsylvania man is accused of getting into a fight with sheriff’s deputies and security personnel at the Seneca Allegany Casino early Sunday morning. Sheriff’s deputies say 48-year-old Thomas Matalino of Hadley, PA, interfered with the arrest of another person and was arrested for obstruction. He resisted and hit a deputy multiple times in the head. Matalino was taken to jail on $2,500 cash bail and scheduled to appear in Salamanca City Court on April 11. A Buffalo man tried to swallow some evidence during a traffic stop Thursday night in Olean. Police say they stopped 33-year-old Christopher Booker for a traffic violation and learned that he swallowed an unknown quantity of marijuana. He was taken to Olean General Hospital for observation, then released with appearance tickets for City of Olean Court. Booker is charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, obstruction of governmental administration and tampering with physical evidence. He was also cited for not using a turn signal. By ANNE HOLLIDAY WESB/WBRR News Director Foster Township’s sewer line project could cost about a million dollars less than originally planned. “We’ve taken what was thought to be a 5, 6 million dollar project and … I think it’s about 4.4 million,” said new township engineer Harold Bloomgren of Northwest Engineering. “That’s a little easier to handle.” Bloomgren attended Monday’s Foster Township supervisors meeting and gave a report on the updated Act 537 Plan. Northwest has taken over engineering duties from E&M Engineers after a mistake by E&M cost the township a low interest PENNVEST loan. E&M’s insurance company is currently considering an “errors and omissions” claim so the township can get its money back. The new plan developed by Northwest calls for using low pressure sewer lines with grinder pumps instead of gravity lines. The actual cost to township residents will depend on if funding comes from PENNVEST or Rural Utility Service, and the terms of the loans and/or gr...
