Clarion Students’ Association, in collaboration with the Traditions Council, unveiled an apple sculpture Sept. 7 on the lawn of Grunenwald Center for Science and Technology. The white, marble composite apple is an open canvas on which students can express themselves and promote their organizations. “In the spring of 2010, CSA and the Traditions Council approached Student Senate with the challenge to create a new tradition on campus that will capture the energy and enthusiasm of student organizations,” said Joanna Catalano (’12), former president of Student Senate and member of CSA board and Traditions Council. “After several polls of the student body and many conversations with the university’s administration, the idea was born.” Funded through the CSA Special Projects Fund, the apple honors Clarion University’s long-standing commitment to education since its founding as Clarion Seminary in 1867. “We chose the shape of an apple as a tribute to the university’s history and mission...

More than 300 members of the extended St.. Bonaventure family attended a prayer service on a steamy September afternoon to remember the victims of Sept. 11, 2001. Fr. Francis Di Spigno, O.F.M., executive director of University Ministries, led the solemn ceremony, which honored the three university alumni killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Prayers for peace and an end to violence around the world, including Syria, were also read. Fr. Mychal Judge, O.F.M., a 1957 St. Bonaventure graduate, became the first official (recorded) victim of 9/11 when he was killed by falling debris while attending to a victim at the World Trade Center in New York. Fr. Mychal was chaplain of the New York City Fire Department at the time, and a beloved friar known for his outreach to all people. Hauser Set to Retire After 12 Years at Helm Virginia Hauser, Executive Director of the Bradford Regional Medical Center Auxiliary since 2001, has announced that she will retire this month. Hauser is widely credited with bringing about a talented board of directors and staff. She has been instrumental in guiding the Auxiliary in supporting the mission and vision of Bradford Regional Medical Center through fundraising and retail efforts. The auxiliary sponsors annual nursing scholarships to area students who express an interest in entering the profession, and conducts several fundraising efforts, both at the hospital and in the community. Also under Hauser’s leadership is HeartStrings Gift Shop, located in the main lobby of Bradford Regional Medical Center. Going the wrong way down a one-way street led to drug charges against a Bradford teenager. 18-year-old Richard Anderson was stopped at about 8:15 p.m. on June 6 for going the wrong way on Pleasant Street. After giving him a citation, police asked if they could search his vehicle. They found suspected marijuana and a smoking device that smelled like burnt marijuana, according to papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone’s office. Charges of possession of marijuana, use and possession of drug paraphernalia and driving the wrong way were bound to McKean County Court following a preliminary hearing. A Tonawanda, New York, man accused of threatening people in downtown Bradford and fighting with police has waived his preliminary hearing. 33-year-old Andre Jackson threatened to beat up three men in the Tops parking lot in the early morning hours of August 5 but, according to papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone’s office, he left when they said they were going to call police. Police found him walking down the middle of Main Street and, when they were questioning him, he yelled at them and argued with them until he was put in a holding cell. Jackson is charged with terroristic threats, harassment, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct, and is jailed on $5,000 bail. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Members of American Legion Post 108 in Bradford participated in a flag-raising ceremony this morning at Chapel Ridge. The flag was raised to the top of the pole, then immediately lowered to half-staff in recognition of Patriot Day. State Representative Marty Causer, who donated the new flag, was on hand for the ceremony and said we should always remember the sacrifices emergency responders made on September 11, 2001, and be thankful for the first responders we have. Bradford police found and arrested the fugitive they were looking for, and now 27-year-old Matthew Musolino is in McKean County Jail. Musolino allegedly sold more than $4,400 dollars’ worth of his aunt’s jewelry to Orris Jewelers on August 1. Then, on August 19, while police were looking for him, he allegedly ran from them during a traffic stop. Musolino is charged with flight to avoid apprehension and felony counts of receiving stolen property. His bail is $30,000 and he is scheduled to appear in Central Court next Thursday. Cattaraugus County District Attorney Lori Rieman seems to have won the Republican primary to retain her spot, beating current public defender Mark Williams by a large margin. Unofficial results from the board of elections show Rieman with 2,104 votes to 864 for Williams. Only 17 percent of the county’s registered Republicans voted. A burglary and theft spree has led to charges against a Cattaraugus County man. State police say they were investigating a theft complaint on Tuesday in the Town of Machias and discovered that several other crimes, including two burglaries, had taken place during the overnight hours. They later found the stolen property in a vehicle on Franklin Street. Jarrett Richardson of Machias was charged with burglary, petit larceny and criminal mischief, and sent to jail in lieu of $10,000. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

A Bradford man accused of punching a woman in the face has waived his preliminary hearing on assault and harassment charges. Lewis Cornelius Jr. is accused of confronting a woman at around 3 a.m. on August 18 when she got home, and then throwing her to the ground and punching her three times, according to papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone’s office. A Bradford man is accused of sending inappropriate messages to a 12-year-old girl. 20-year-old Robert Jones waived his preliminary hearing on charges of unlawful contact with minor and corruption of minors. Papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone’s office say the girl’s father contacted police when he discovered his daughter had been receiving messages of a “sexual nature.” The messages were sent between May 21 and July 26, and Jones did ask the girl for sex. Dexter N. Rankin, 60, of 551 Interstate Parkway, passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 8, 2013, in Bradford Regional Medical Center. Born May 7, 1953 in Bradford, he was a son of Malcolm R. Rankin who survives and the late M. Helen (Tremblay) Rankin. A 1972 graduate of Bradford Area High School, he was employed at Futures Rehabilitation Center for 39 years and was renowned for his productivity. He was active in McKean County Special Olympics and had competed at regional and state level events. He also enjoyed playing bingo, attending sporting events, movies and theater presentations. He loved to read and spent countless hours at the Bradford Public Library. In addition to his father, Malcolm Rankin, he is survived by one sister, Linda Rankin, of Richardson, TX; several aunts and uncles and numerous cousins. After getting into a collision with an Amish buggy Monday night a Forestville man is facing DWI charges. Sheriff’s deputies say 40-year-old Jason Merritt was on Stockton-Hartfield Road at 8:34 p.m. when the accident happened. Several Pearl Street residents took a neighborhood problem to Bradford City Council Tuesday night. Kevin Caldwell told council he and many of his neighbors are fed up with the 17 people living in a single-family house at 41 Pearl. He said the neighbors are concerned about cleanliness, safety and noise. Among the problems, he said, are that the people sleep all day and stay up all night making noise. “When you’re going to work (in the morning), they’re still on the porch partying,” Caldwell said. “I wouldn’t want to live next to it,” said code enforcement officer Mike Cleveland. But he added that there are never any major code violations when he visits the house and the violations he has found, they managed to fix. “I feel for ya,” Cleveland said. Police Chief Chris Lucco added he is “more familiar with the situation than I’d like to be,” adding that he did an emergency welfare check and found that every person had a bed and “the house was cleaner than many, many, many houses I’...

City of Bradford Police on Tuesday investigated motor vehicle accidents on Prospect Street and in the Kiwanis Court parking lot, and disturbances on Amm and Rochester streets. They got complaints about harassment on Walker and Lorana avenues, disorderly conduct on Williams Street and animals on Keating Avenue and Forman Street. Michael Gary Williams, 32, of 1113 North Main St. Limestone, passed away, peacefully, on Sunday, September 8, 2013, at Olean General Hospital. Born December 16, 1980, in Bradford, he was the son of Michael D. and Sandra L. (Eidson) Williams. He was a 1999 graduate of Allegany-Limestone High School and BOCES of Olean with a degree in Criminal Justice. He loved fishing, hunting, cooking and spending time with his family and friends. Mike moved to Delaware in November of 1999 but returned to Limestone in November of 2011 after battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma and poor health. He was previously employed at Eastern Shore Energy in Camden DE, Lyon-Conklin in Millsboro DE, and at Tasta Pizza Express in Limestone.
