02/26/08 - Contest to Create 'Bradford City Flag'
The Police Department thinks Bradford should have a City Flag, and that a contest should be held to pick the design. During Tuesday's Bradford City Council meeting, Mayor Tom Riel read a letter from Police Chief Mike Close that offered the suggestion for the contest. All of the details haven't been worked out yet, but the design would be chosen by May 1 and Bottorf Embroidery wouldl create the flag, which would be unveiled during the Memorial Day Parade. City Council would have final approval of the design.

02/26/08 - Bradford City Council Meets
Bradford resident Steve Stidd questioned Bradford City Council about using C-D-B-G money for a new splash park at Callahan Park while the pool at Burns Memorial Park on North Kendall Avenue hasn't been in use for 3 years. Mayor Tom Riel and Parks Diretor Chip Comilla explained that many more people use Callahan, which is one reason the money is being spent there. Riel, Comilla and Councilman Rick Benton did say that the city is not ignoring Burns Memorial Park, and repairs are being planned.

The Bradford City Fire Station is getting a makeover. Carpeting will be installed in four rooms, and vinyl tile will be installed in the downstairs office. Also, six new windows will installed, with city firefighters doing the work.

Jackson Avenue resident Tim Reed asked council if lines could be painted on his street to help motorists stay on the correct side of the road, especially at night when it's more difficult to navigate. Public Works Director Gary Alcock says city-maintained roads can't have painted lines, but he will look into finding a solution for the problem.

Councilman Ross Neidich raised concerns about parking in front of School Street Elementary School. He says that parents waiting to pick up their children in front of the school are causing a "horrendous traffic problem." Mayor Tom Riel suggested that Police Chief Mike Close look into the possibility of having North Center Street be the designated area for parents to pick up and drop off students.

Also Tuesday night, Council waived an ordinance so beer can be sold outside by the Fraternal Order of Eagles during Stinkfest, which will be held May 3 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

02/27/08 - Lawmakers Snuff Out Expansion Plan
Cattaraugus County legislators have decided not to give a tax break to a Kill Buck company that wants to expand. Lake Erie Tobacco Company wants to be included in the Cattaraugus Empire Zone, but lawmakers have decided it's not appropriate to give tax breaks and other incentives to a company that makes cigarettes. Company officials haven't said if they will continue with their expansion plans. They had planned to create 12 new jobs a year for the next four years if they got the incentives from the county.

02/27/08 - Legendary Steeler Broadcaster Dies
The former Pittsburgh Steelers announcer known for his screechy voice and for creating the Terrible Towel has died. Myron Cope was 79. Joe Gordon, a former Steelers executive and a longtime friend of Cope's, said the announcer died Wednesday morning at a nursing home in Mount Lebanon, a Pittsburgh suburb.
