Arson Fire in Johnsonburg

Someone set a mattress on fire outside a Johnsonburg house while a couple and their four children were sleeping inside at 3:30 this morning.

State Police Fire Marshal Greg Agosti says the mattress was propped against the back of the house at 321 First Avenue awaiting disposal.

32-year-old James Jordan, 31-year-old Holly Stahli and the children were awakened by the smoke and put the fire out before the fire department arrived.

No one was hurt. Damage to the building is estimated at $10,000.

Agosti says a Molotov cocktail was found burning in an alley between First and Second avenues about 3 ½ hours before the fire was started.

Note: mattresses are sometimes put outside to have enough air for sleeping in such places as San Francisco CA peninsula environs (which has a 'Russian Hill' area).
