New Area Code for McKean County

McKean County will be getting a new area code.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission voted today to split the 814 area code to avoid running out of phone numbers by 2013.

The new area code will be applied to McKean, Jefferson and Elk counties and west.

The Commission decided the geographic split was the most practical solution.

The actual new number for the new area code will be determined in the coming weeks by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), which is the neutral third party area code relief planner for Pennsylvania.

The new area code will be implemented Feb. 1, 2012.

It's not fair to your region at all. Now every business, every customer and every phone company have just been burdened (while the other half have a free ride) in a tough economy and a complex pattern these days. Not to mention the hassles of changing business cards, billboards, promotions, etc.

An 814 overlay would have made MUCH more sense. The only downside - 10-digit dialing (already a reality in much of Pennsylvania and many other states) - is a minor inconvenience in comparison. No numbers would change there and no one would win or lose.

If the decision was about building a major highway/interstate or industry, they would have quickly dismissed McKean County but change an area code, oh yes, let's not bother the more populated areas.
