Fitness Center One Step Closer

The Bradford Area School District has jumped another hurdle on its way to building a fitness center at the high school.

The school board on Monday approved an easement contract necessary to building the center. District Business Manager Kathy Boyd explained that the contract will be presented to the Department of Environmental Protection, which then has to approve it.

DEP approval is the final step before the project can be put out to bid, she said.

Also on Monday, the board approved a bid of $85,910 from Blue Bird of Pittsburgh for a 72-passenger school bus that adheres to new emissions standards. The other bid was $88,960 from Wolfington Body Company.

Boyd said she thought the bids would be much high so she is pleased. She said the bus should be delivered to the district in July.

Student representative Olivia Astor noted that the high school’s Winter Carnival is January 21. The dance is after the basketball game, and that’s when the king and queen will be crowned.

She also mentioned that Mrs. Krebs’ homeroom won the holiday door decorating contest.

Because January is School Directors Appreciation Month in Pennsylvania, it’s been a tradition in Bradford for students from all the schools to show their appreciation to the school board during its first meeting of the year.

Second-graders GGB played instruments and sang "Frosty the Snowman" in English and Spanish. School Street Elementary students presented a program on how their iPod Touches are helping them in a variety of ways.

The district bought 400 iPod Touches that are being used in pre-kindergarten to 12th grade, according to Superintendent Sandra Romanowksi. She said the elementary students use them for labs, and there are five in each classroom. The middle school uses them for language arts and math. In the high school, teachers sign them for specific projects.

Also during the meeting, the Fretz Middle School Jazz band performed a couple of pieces and Manu Gajanan played "The Minute Waltz" on the piano. Bradford High students performed excerpts from their upcoming musical “The Apple Tree.”

Romanowski passed on a bit of “trivia” to those at the meeting.

“We hear so many times people saying that all the money in school districts is spent on sports,” Romanowski said. “We certainly have a very accomplished athletic department in our school district. But I actually went into the budget last year and compared the numbers, and in this school district the school board spends far more on our arts program than they do on all of athletics.”

“Children do not have to choose between the two,” she added, “and many of the students are involved in both.”

Also during the meeting, the board accepted the resignations of high school secretary Marguerite Bennardi, effective June 30, and Fretz secretary Judy Kuntz, effective July 1. Bennardi has been with the district for 36 years; Kuntz for 35 years.

All programs will be managed, in the same manner as education is important, so you do not need to pay extra for special programs.
