Roswell Park Moves Up Six Spots on
List of Nation’s Best Cancer Centers
BUFFALO, NY — Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) has again been ranked among the top cancer hospitals in the nation in U.S. News & World Report's 2011-12 Best Hospitals, published online at http://www.usnews.com/besthospitals. RPCI jumped six spots, to 27, on the publication’s annual roster of Top-Ranked Hospitals for Cancer — the only New York State institution outside Manhattan in the top 50 cancer centers.
In addition to its national ranking, RPCI captured the top spot as the best hospital in the Buffalo metro region, and was recognized as “high-performing” in the medical specialties of Gynecology, Urology and Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases. The rankings will be featured in the U.S. News Best Hospitals guidebook, which will go on sale August 30.

In compiling its national list of 140 Best Hospitals in 16 specialties, U.S. News evaluated 4,825 U.S. medical centers. The rankings are driven by data such as survival score, patient safety, nurse staffing and reputation.
“In a highly specialized field like oncology, emerging therapies can save lives, and the outcome often depends on the initial diagnosis and treatment; healthcare consumers should select their care providers very carefully,” said Judy Smith, MD, MS, CPE, FACS, Medical Director of RPCI. “Increasingly, patients are able to use factors such as quality of care, outcomes and other indicators such as rankings like U.S. News’ into their decision-making. The more information and resources they have, the better.” In May, RPCI became one of the first cancer centers to issue a comprehensive report card on its clinical care, trends and outcomes.
