University of Pittsburgh Raises Tuition

The University of Pittsburgh's Board of Trustees this morning approved an 8.5 percent tuition increase for in-state students.

The increase is 4.0 percent for both in-state and out-of-state students enrolled in the programs of the Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown and Titusville campuses.

Chancellor Mark Nordenberg blamed a 19 percent reduction in state funding that took $40 million from the university's $1.94 billion operating budget.

Pitt cost-cutting would cover about 60 percent of the state reduction with the tuition increase picking up the rest.

The tuition increase will take effect in the fall.
