Rain Invading the Northeast,
Cold Air to Follow

A mild but wet day is unfolding across the Northeast with chilly air and the prospect of snow in some areas waiting in the wings.
The rain that soaked and set daily records in the Midwest on Wednesday will continue to crawl through the Northeast today, weakening in the process.
While steadier pockets of rain stream across the Northeast's interior, spottier showers will dot the I-95 corridor.
"Very little rain may reach the lower Delmarva Peninsula and southeastern Virginia," stated AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
Most of the showers from New York City to Washington, D.C., will hold off until later this afternoon, allowing residents to take full advantage of this unusually mild mid-December day.
Temperatures today will approach or crack the 60-degree mark northward along the I-95 corridor to New York City and from the upper Ohio Valley to Erie, Pa.
Highs in the 50s and 40s, which are more common in early to mid-November, will grace the rest of the Northeast.
The interior of northern New England is the only part of the Northeast where winter is making an appearance. Stubborn cold air has set the stage for snow and a wintry mix to precede the rain and milder air this morning.
As the rain leaves, a period of winds gusting to 40 mph will spread from the Great Lakes eastward across the Northeast tonight into Friday.
The door will also open for a fresh invasion of colder air.
Snow showers and a significant drop in high temperatures await the interior on Friday. The I-95 will also turn cooler, but to a lesser degree.
Even chillier air will settle across the entire Northeast this weekend with the core of the cold gripping New England. Northern New England will likely endure its coldest day so far this winter season on Saturday.
More snow showers will spread across the eastern Great Lakes on Saturday with a few flurries streaking to the mid-Atlantic coast at night not out of the question.
The cold will eventually release its grip on the Northeast next week, leading to another opportunity for a mainly rain event at midweek.
"However, there is the chance that a storm develops along the Atlantic coast Christmas weekend, creating a last-minute chance at snow for portions of the Northeast coast," reported AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Meghan Evans.
