UPB Administrator Receives Top Honor

Dr. Ron Binder, associate dean of student affairs at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, was the 2011 recipient of the Robert H. Shaffer Award from the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors.

The Shaffer award is the AFA’s highest honor for a professional fraternity or sorority advisor. The award was presented during the organization’s annual meeting in St. Louis.

The Shaffer Award is presented annually to an individual in the field of higher education who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to fraternities and sororities and who demonstrates a commitment to fostering positive change in the Greek community.

Binder is a past-president of the AFA, having served in 2005-06.

He joined the staff at Pitt-Bradford last year not only as associate dean of student affairs, but also as director of judicial affairs. He came to Pitt-Bradford from the University of South Carolina, where he was the director of Greek life and special projects.

He has spoken nationally on risk management and alcohol and substance abuse and has been cited in Newsweek, “NBC Nightly News,” National Public Radio’s “Talk of the Nation” and Court TV.

Binder has extensive experience in Greek affairs, speaking around the country at Sigma Phi Epsilon leadership programs, is involved with the National Collaborative for Hazing Research and Prevention, and founded the Hazing Hotline at USC.

He has also worked in student affairs at Bowling Green (Ohio) State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Georgia, where he earned his doctoral degree.

In 2012, he will become the co-chairman of the Fraternity and Sorority Knowledge Community of NASPA, the leading association of the student affairs profession.
