Swain Resort Purchase Finalized

The owners of Ski Denton in Potter County are now the new owners of the Swain Resort in Allegany County, New York.

Denton Hill Family and Ski Resort Inc. has been running Swain for the last two years, and the purchase completes a lease-to-own agreement that was reached in August of 2009 with the previous owners.

“We have been greatly encouraged by the support of what we call the ‘Swain Family Ski Community’ and its positive reception to our efforts,” said Scott Carts, who along with Jodi Carts and Shawn and Celeste Schoonover, is an officer in the company.

“Skier visits at the resort have increased by about 20% over the past two seasons and our hands-on customer service approach has been a key factor in winning back school club groups as well,” Carts said in a news release sent to WESB and The Hero.

The installation in the summer of 2011 of 3,000 feet of new snowmaking lines now provides Swain with 98% snowmaking capacity, adding Maverick, Zig-Zag, Fools Gold, and The Pass to the accessible trails.

Last year, Swain also began the first phase of its overnight lodging plans to create ski & stay opportunities with the purchase of the Mountainside Inn, adding a two-building, nine-unit, lodging property that is adjacent to its parking lot.

The next phase is the slope side development that will provide ski in/ski out access to the planned trail expansion on the west side of the mountain. This area encompasses a 27-unit sub-division, including available lots ranging in size up to three acres. Half of the properties will have direct slope access, and the remainder will have ski in/hike out access through a series of right-of-ways and trails. The mountain bike, hiking, and cross-country ski trail system is also being integrated into the design so residents will have year-round recreation access from their properties.

“We are very excited about this phase of development at Swain Resort as we believe it will have significant long term benefits to both Swain and the local economy by boosting longer-term and permanent stays in the area,” Carts said.

“All of these current and planned improvements will only strengthen Swain Resort as the largest tourism attraction in Allegany County and as an important contributor to the local economy with many full-time professional and many seasonal jobs,” said John Foels, the county’s economic development director, in the news release. “We are fortunate to have an experienced team in the Carts and Schoonover families leading Swain into a promising future.”

The purchase price was not disclosed.
