Dr. Terry Hoover Dies at Age 65

Terrance J. Hoover, Ph.D., 65, of 65 Ann Lane, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Olean General Hospital.

Born September 24, 1946, in Clearfield, he was a son of the late Edna Mae (Smith) and John Claire Hoover.

On August 1, 1970 in the Heinz Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh, he married Linda J. (Popovich) Hoover, who survives.

A 1964 graduate of Curwensville High School, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts in 1964. He then received a Master of Arts in Teaching in 1969 from the University of Pittsburgh and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration, also from the University of Pittsburgh in 1981.

He worked as a teacher and Assistant Principal at South Park Area Junior/Senior High School from 1968 until 1973. He then was the Assistant Principal at Indiana High School from 1973 until 1979. In 1979, he moved to Bradford with his family and was the Principal of School Street Junior High School until 1988, when he became the Principal of Floyd C. Fretz Middle School and worked at that capacity until his retirement in 2005.

From 1984 to 1995, Dr. Hoover coached wrestling in the Bradford Area School district having served as the Head Junior High coach for seven years and the Head Varsity Coach for four years. He also served as a PIAA wrestling coach for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District IX Committee for 19 years and served as chairman for four years. He was also a member of the State Board of Directors for the PIAA for four years

While at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Hoover was a three-year letterman in wrestling and a two-year letterman in football. In 1968, he was named the Pitt News Athlete of the Year, and was the recipient of the Charles C. Hartwig Award, which was given annually to the Senior who had done the most to promote and sponsor the best interest of University athletics. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and into the PIAA District IX Wrestling coaches Hall of Fame in 2003.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons Sean (Ann) Hoover of Pittsburgh and Justin (Kristen) Hoover of North Huntingdon;a brother, Gary (Patty) Hoover, of Creekside; two sisters, Marianne Moore, of Clearfield; Janet Walters, of Clearfield; two grandchildren, Carly and Myles Hoover of Pittsburgh and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Christian Brendon Hoover on June 18, 1971.

Friends are invited to call from 3-5 & 7-9 PM, Friday, July 13, 2012 in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. East Main St., where funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, July 14, 2012 with Rev. Max Miller, Pastor of the Bradford Area Parish, officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in Willow Dale Cemetery.
