Pickup Truck Crash Leaves Town of
Chautauqua Residents Without Power
Route 394 in the Town of Chautauqua was closed for about two hours this afternoon after a pickup truck sheared off a utility pole and the live wires started a fire on a nearby pine tree.
Sheriff’s deputies say that at about 2:30 17-year-old Nicholas Melquist of Jamestown was just past the Willow Run Golf Course when he got distracted and veered off the road. His pickup sheared off a National Grid pole. National Grid had to turn off the main transmission lines for the area before the truck could be removed from the scene, and power will remain off for several more hours because the pole was carrying the main transmission lines for the area.
The truck was destroyed in the crash.
Melquist’s airbag deployed, and he was wearing a seatbelt. Although he suffered only minor injuries he was taken to Westfield Memorial Hospital for observation.
