Eleanor Walker

Eleanor Jane (Leap) Walker, 87, formerly of Limestone, NY, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, in the Bradford Ecumenical Home.

Born November 22, 1925, in New Martinsville, WV, she a was daughter of J. Paul and Dora E. (Rothlisberger) Leap.

On August 21, 1948 in New Martinsville, WV. she married John J. "Jack" Walker, Jr., who died December 21, 2002.

Mrs. Walker was a graduate of Magnolia High School in New Martinsville, West Virginia. She had been employed as an executive secretary in the Purchasing Department at PPG Industries while living in New Martinsville. After moving to Limestone in 1965, she worked as a legal secretary for McDowell, McDowell Wick & Daly and later as a secretary for Goodman Brother's Inc. She retired from the NY State Court System, in the Surrogate's Court in Little Valley, NY. After her retirement she was employed by Green Thumb, Inc., as an office assistant for the Cattaraugus County Department of Youth Corrections for Boys in Limestone. She was also employed by the Village of Limestone as School Tax Collector, and held that position for many years.

Mrs. Walker was a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club of New Martinsville, and later became a member of the club in Bradford. She was also a member of the Desk & Derrick Club of Bradford. She served as Resident Council President at the Bradford Ecumenical Home and when she was able, she read to the residents each Friday afternoon. While a resident at the Ecumenical Home she enjoyed helping other residents feel welcome during their transition from home.

She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in New Martinsville where she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bradford and was an ordained Deacon. As a deacon she made many phone calls for church activities and coordinated memorial luncheons for families who had lost loved ones.

She was a Girl Scout leader and coordinated the Girl Scout Cookie Sales in New Martinsville for many years. She was also a member of the 200/500 Club in the New Martinsville Women's Bowling League. She was a volunteer for the McKean County Chapter of the American Red Cross and Bradford's former Community Outreach Program.

Surviving are two daughters, Michelle Lin "Mickey" (the late Daniel) Swackhamer, and Shelley Marie (Jerry) Harvey, all of Bradford: four granddaughters: Amy J. (Tom) Raught of Eldred, Lisa L. (John) Fedak of Bradford, Erin E. (Joshua) Bridge of Pittsburgh, and Beth A. (Jason ) Manwaring of Elmira, NY, five great granddaughters, Kaitlin and Calley Raught, Bailey Fedak, Delaney Bridge and Eleanor Manwaring, three great grandsons, John "Danny" Fedak, Jonah Bridge, and Nolan Manwaring; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son in law, and one sister, Florence P. Bohl.

Family will be receiving friends from 10 to 11 AM, Saturday, March 16, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church, where a memorial service will be held at 11:00 am with Rev. Katherine Randall, Co-Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden.

Memorials if desired may be made to The First Presbyterian Church or The Bradford Ecumenical Home Foundation or to charity of the donor's choice.
