Celebrating National Library Week

By SANDRA RHODES

Activities that appeal to all ages are on tap for this year’s National Library Week at the Bradford Area Public Library.

Tapping on the theme “Communities Matter,” the BAPL is gearing up for a week of exciting activities that run from April 14-April 20.

“We are very excited to be offering these events to the community,” said Ed Pecht, president and chief executive officer of the Library. “We want to celebrate what the Library has to offer all our patrons.”

Some of the featured happenings at the Library have an emphasis on art. There will be a display of art done by students from CARE for Children. Bradford Little Theater will also display the entries from their recent art contest.

Sandy Caparotta will lead a Kids Intro to Art Class 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Library. Preschool Story Hour is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 19.

Throughout the week, accumulated artwork from the Library will be sold. With the wide variety of artwork available, there is something for everyone at a reasonable price.

Library officials are also in a very forgiving mood this week. Fines for overdue books will be waived when a patron returns the overdue book.

As always, the Writing Center will be open from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

An annual event – the Kids Derby – will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20, and will feature face painting, Derby trivia, a clown and live pony rides.

Garth Stein, noted author of “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” – this year’s One Book Bradford selection, will give a talk starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the auditorium of Bradford Area High School.

Election season is gearing up in the Library, too. The American Association of University Women is sponsoring a Candidate Forum at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the Library. Candidates seeking the position of McKean County sheriff and Bradford City Council will be on hand to introduce themselves and answer questions.

Dr. Steve Robar, political science professor at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, will moderate the forum. A reception sponsored by the Women’s Literary Club will follow the forum.

Throughout the day Friday, there will be a patron appreciation reception that will include refreshments and musicians playing in the lobby periodically.

As always, these events are all free and open to the public.

“As you can see, we have so much to offer this week as well as the other 51 weeks in the year,” Pecht said. “Our mission is to be a place where people can come to seek information, fellowship and enjoy a good book or two.”
