Toomey Honored by Boy Scouts
“I am honored to be recognized by the Boy Scouts of America, Minsi Trails Council in Lehigh Valley. Scouting was an important part of my life growing up,” said Sen. Toomey. “It reinforced the lessons my parents taught me about leadership, character, and achievement. That is why I am particularly pleased that my parents could join me for this celebration and proud that my son Patrick has been a Scout for five years now.”
The Distinguished Citizen Award recognizes individuals or organizations that set positive examples for others and demonstrate selfless concern and care for their communities. Sen. Toomey was recognized by area Scouts, friends, family, and business and community leaders for his significant achievements and service to the Lehigh Valley community.
The Distinguished Eagle Scout Award was established in 1969 to acknowledge Eagle Scouts who have distinguished themselves on a national level, receiving recognition or eminence within their field and who have a strong record of voluntary service to their community. The award is granted by the National Eagle Scout Association upon the recommendation of a committee of Distinguished Eagle Scouts. Nationally, just over 2,000 such awards have been earned. Sen. Toomey becomes only the twelfth such recipient in the Minsi Trails Council.
“Sen. Toomey has been an active Executive Board member and Advisory Committee member for nearly 20 years. He successfully chaired several of the Minsi Trails Council Leadership Dinners during his years in the House of Representatives. Sen. Toomey exemplifies all that it means to be an Eagle Scout and was recognized for his significant achievements with Scouting’s Distinguished Eagle Award,” said Craig Poland, Scout Executive and CEO, Minsi Trails Council – Boy Scouts of America.
U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), also a Distinguished Eagle Scout, said, “The Boy Scouts provide values, character, perseverance, goal-setting, community service and leadership. Sen. Toomey was immersed in these attributes in order to be an Eagle before he was 18. He’s continued to make these characteristics of an Eagle Scout an important part of his life. Today, I congratulate him on receiving recognition as a Distinguished Eagle Scout.”
The Minsi Trails Council provides leadership and character development programs to nearly 17,000 youth with 5,500 adult volunteers. The council serves young people throughout the Anthracite Region, Pocono Mountains and Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania along with western New Jersey and serves six-counties: Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, Carbon, Luzerne, and Warren counties. The local Scouting heritage dates back more than 100 years when the council’s first Scout troops were established in the Allentown and Easton areas.
