Charles Cole Memorial Hospital Gets Grant Money
“Healthcare delivery to our rural communities can be challenging,” stated Rep. Thompson. “These types of grants level the playing field with our urban counterparts, and will assist Cole Memorial in upgrading their current technologies to meet the changing industry standards and better serve the people of Coudersport and the surrounding communities.”
Cole Memorial will receive approximately $7,500 that will be used to support the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10, the new diagnosis and procedure code sets used by hospitals to group and identify patient encounters. Hospitals are required to make the transition to ICD-10 by October 1, 2014.
“Cole Memorial is fortunate to have the support of Congressman Thompson and others who understand the need to preserve access to high quality care in rural Pennsylvania,” stated Edward C. Pitchford, President and CEO of Charles Cole Memorial. “Their voice in Washington and Harrisburg on behalf of the citizens who live and work in areas such as ours is invaluable.”
In Pennsylvania, a total of 20 small and rural hospitals with fewer than 50 beds, will receive funds through the SHIP grant. The SHIP funds are initially awarded to the Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health, which provides technical assistance to hospitals throughout the commonwealth.
The Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health was established at Penn State University in 1991. It is a joint effort by the university’s College of Health and Human Development and the Penn State Outreach and Penn State Extension. The office is funded by the federal Office of Rural Health Policy of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and Penn State.
