More Information Released on Gorge Rescue
Sheriff’s deputies have released more information about the rescue operation conducted Tuesday morning after five teenagers went missing in the Chautauqua Gorge.
They say one of the hikers got separated from the group and was found at about 3:30 a.m. and brought out safely. The other four were stuck on a ledge about 30 feet above the bottom of the gorge. Because of hazardous conditions, rescue personnel had to wait until daylight to attempt to get them out. At around 8:15 a.m. the four were brought out safely.
No one was hurt. Two of the hikers are from Israel; one from Houston; one from St. Louis; and one from Woodmere, New York. Three are 17 years old; two are 18.
