Exhibit by Award-Winning Artist at KOA Art Gallery
The show opens with a reception at 7 p.m. Friday in the KOA Art Gallery in Blaisdell Hall and will be on view through March 15. It is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday.
Mead, who lives and works in the Buffalo, N.Y., area, is known for creating small two- and three-dimensional collages. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, George Eastman House/International Museum of Film and Photography, Brooklyn Art Library and the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage and Construction.
Works by Mead have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and six other nations and are published in five collegiate textbooks.
Mead has long been intrigued by discarded objects and found images, regarding them as potent and poetic cultural artifacts. He has, for years, collected and categorized these materials as resources for his artistic practice.
“The idea of appropriating objects, detritus and illustrative material and giving them new meaning through a process of recombination has historic precedents in the genres of collage and assemblage,” he said. “However, this strategy takes on new relevance in today’s society – a ‘remix’ culture characterized by recycling, sampling, mixing and decontextualizing.”
Mead has lectured at Cambridge University and Chautauqua (N.Y.) Institution, received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts and is an appointed member of the Buffalo Arts Commission.
He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in visual studies from the University at Buffalo and currently teaches at SUNY Buffalo State.
