Weekend Reading List:

I'm caught up with my other books for interviews so I get to go back to Dark Sky & Joe Pickett. I'm always excited to speak with C.J. but more so this year. His publicist says it's OK to ask about Big Sky and I do have a few questions about that. But I also want to know if its success means the powers-that-be are more receptive to getting a Joe Pickett series on the air. I hope so! If I finish this I'll start:  Review/interview coming soon for:

Clarion University Theatre Livestreams ‘An Iliad’

Image
Clarion University Theatre’s season continues with “An Iliad” by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare, based on the award-winning Robert Fagles translation of Homer’s epic poem. It is the story of the Trojan War – the rage of Achilles, the bravery of Prince Hector of Troy, the sense of duty of Patroclus – as filtered through the poet who witnessed it all and painfully recalls the story.   “Written as a solo piece, the Clarion production uses a quintet of actors to portray the poet, the muses and to bring the armies of Greece and Troy to life,” said director Robert Gerald Levy of Clarion University’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts. “This adaptation of the Fagles translation maintains the verse of the original, with contemporary language, coupled with the commentary on war by Peterson and O’Hare. It sings with authenticity while maintaining a contemporary view of the glories and horrors of war.”   “Preparing this production has been a challenge, but the ...

I Didn't Know There Was a Patron Saint of Christian Artists

Image
Blessed John of Fiesole   Saint of the Day for February 18   (1387 – February 18, 1455)   Click here to listen Blessed John of Fiesole’s Story The patron of Christian artists was born around 1400 in a village overlooking Florence. He took up painting as a young boy and studied under the watchful eye of a local painting master. He joined the Dominicans at about age 20, taking the name Fra Giovanni. He eventually came to be known as Fra Angelico, perhaps a tribute to his own angelic qualities or maybe the devotional tone of his works. He continued to study painting and perfect his own techniques, which included broad-brush strokes, vivid colors and generous, lifelike figures. Michelangelo once said of Fra Angelico: “One has to believe that this good monk has visited paradise and been allowed to choose his models there.” Whatever his subject matter, Fra Angelico sought to generate feelings of religious devotion in response to his paintings. Among his most famous works...

Review: Those Who Are Saved

Image
Every time I read a book about World War II I learned something new, and am reminded of the atrocities most of us born post-war cannot even fathom. The story is told from three points of view: Vera, a woman who must leave occupied France and decided to leave her daughter with her governess to keep her safe; Lucie, her daughter, who was four-years-old when her parents left; and Sasha, a Hollywood writer and director who enlists in the army the day Pearl Harbor is bombed, who has parent issues of his own, and connects with Vera. Most of the story is about Vera wondering if Lucie is alive and safe, and hoping she can be reunited with her someday, as well as the new life she is building for herself after escaping Europe. One of the things about World War II that I hadn't thought much about was the displaced children, some of whom were never reunited with their families. Whether they were Jewish or parents of Resistance fighters or any number of other reasons they had to be hidden and g...
