"Still Life" author Louise Penny thanks Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ron Orris for the Zippo lighter he presented her with following her talk "Three Pines and Beyond" Tuesday night. Penny's visit to Bradford was the culmination of this year's One Book Bradford events.

This year's One Book Bradford season will culminate with its last event on Tuesday night - a visit from Canadian author Louise Penny. Penny, the author who penned the "Three Pines" series, including "Still Life," will give a talk at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Mukaiyama Room in the Frame-Westerberg Commons Building at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The event is free and open to the public. Penny, a New York Times bestselling author, will be available for books signings after her talk. Refreshments will also be provided. Books are available at Tina's Hallmark and the Panther Shop at Pitt-Bradford. Earlier on Tuesday, Penny will also speak to students at Bradford Area High School. In its fourth year, One Book Bradford is a community-wide reading initiative in which a book is picked and the community is encouraged to read it. One Book Bradford — Murders in Our Valley — is a two-part event set for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in the community room at the Bradford Area Public Library. A representative from the McKean County Historical Society will give a presentation on local murders titled Tales of Murders in the Bradford Area. Dr. Tony Gaskew, a professor of criminal justice at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, will talk of Insights to Modern Day Sleuthing Techniques, drawing inspiration from “Still Life.” Gaskew gave a preview of his presentation on today's LiveLine at 12:35 on 1490 WESB. In its fourth year, One Book Bradford is a community-wide reading initiative in which a book is picked and the community is encouraged to read it. Several activities are held throughout the season, which culminates with a visit from the author. “I was so pleased and so humbled that you would choose my books,” Penny said. “You know, Emily Dickenson called novels, 'frigates' that allowed us to travel to places we wouldn't normally go. “Bradford has taken it that glorious extra step, by not only choosing to 'travel' to Quebec, but in spending months reading the series and considering it, you are bridging the considerable divide between Bradford and Quebec.
