Six months ago no one would have been able to tell me I'd be able to come up with anything for this list. I was beyond devastated and depressed and, for the first time in my life, could not see a light at the end of the tunnel. But, day by day, it's getting a little better. I still cry. It still hurts more than I thought was possible. But, I was able to find some things to put on my list. ITHACA, N.Y. (News Release) — Get your game on for Thanksgiving – and we aren’t talking about football. For many families, fresh venison and wild trout are culinary traditions intertwined with the fall season, Thanksgiving and winter’s first bite of frosty air. Wild Harvest Table, a Cornell Cooperative Extension website, offers hints, tips and recipes for preparing wild-harvest foods while helping researchers study how local game is an important part of the locavore movement. The site started as a celebration of the culinary bounty represented by wild game and fish in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Cornell Cooperative Extension nutrition educator Moira Tidball, from Seneca County, started the website in January 2009 as a resource for game and fish recipes, nutrition information, and preparation techniques. The Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be held at 7 o'clock tonight in the First Presbyterian Church, 54 East Corydon St., Bradford. This year’s theme is “ Peace,” and will feature speakers representing the Jewish, Hindu, Muslim and Christian faiths. This annual event has become an inspirational service during the approaching Thanksgiving time of year with significant messages being shared. A special choir presentation will be performed by members of area churches and will include St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church, Emanuel Lutheran Church, Church of the Ascension, and First Presbyterian Church. Choir members from St. Francis Catholic Church, Hill Memorial United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, and First Methodist Church have also been invited to participate. Thirteen people were killed in crashes investigated by state troopers during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday driving period, State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan announced today. In addition to the 13 fatalities, 349 people were injured in the 1,124 crashes to which troopers responded during the official holiday driving period, covering Wednesday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 25. Five of the people killed were not wearing seat belts and two of the 13 fatal crashes were alcohol-related. Overall, 86 of the 1,124 total crashes were alcohol-related. “Drivers must insist that all passengers wear a seat belt -- they work best when everyone is buckled and children are properly restrained in the back seat,’’ Noonan said. State law requires that children under the age of 4 ride in a federally-approved car seat that is appropriate for the child's age, height and weight. I’m thankful for everyone at UPMC Hamot who treated my mom – and our family – so well for 15 long days. I’m thankful for an understanding employer and co-workers who pitched in and helped during those 15 days, too. And, for my friends (including cousins) who offered help, support and prayers. SodaHead.com , the web’s largest opinion based community, today released the results of a poll asking the public their opinions on their favorite things about Thanksgiving. Results included: - For men, their favorite part of the holiday is spending time with family (31%), followed by eating (29%) and watching football (13%) - For women, their favorite of Thanksgiving is eating (36%), followed by family time (31%) and watching football (10%) - The favorite food on Thanksgiving is turkey (33%), followed by stuffing (23%), mashed potatoes (11%) and sweet potatoes (7%). The classic green bean casserole only received 4% of the vote. - The favorite dessert on Thanksgiving is pumpkin pie (41%), followed by pecan pie (18%), apple pie (14%) and sweet potato pie (7%) - On Black Friday, 28% of women and 20% of men plan on hitting the stores. The retail cost of menu items for a classic Thanksgiving dinner including turkey, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and all the basic trimmings increased less than 1 percent this year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation. AFBF’s 27th annual informal price survey of classic items found on the Thanksgiving Day dinner table indicates the average cost of this year’s feast for 10 is $49.48, a 28-cent price increase from last year’s average of $49.20. “At just under $5 per person, the cost of this year’s meal remains a bargain,” said AFBF President Bob Stallman, a rice and cattle producer from Texas. “Our diverse farm and ranch families are honored to produce the food from our nation’s land for family Thanksgiving celebrations.
